STATEMENT BY CHRYSLER CHAIRMAN LEE A. IACOCCA
 REGARDING JAPAN TRADE NEGOTIATIONS
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement by Chrysler Chairman Lee A. Iacocca regarding Japan trade negotiations:
I applaud the President for making trade the focus of this historic mission to Japan. Some gains were achieved during the meeting, especially in the auto parts area and in raising awareness in the U.S. and Japan of the crippling $40 billion trade imbalance.
I'm less enthusiastic about the progress made in the $20 billion auto vehicle portion of the deficit. The agreed upon reductions are token and don't take effect for three years. At this rate, it will take until well into the next century to even make a dent in the deficit or to have any impact on job creation.
In the end, actions speak louder than words. We had a lot of words in Japan this week. Now it's action time and the ball is in Japan's court.
