STATEMENT BY CHARLES KNOX, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC SAFETY/SUPERINTENDENT OF POLICE OF THE PORT AUTHORITY OF NY & NJ REGARDING WHITNEY HOUSTON

NEW YORK, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was released today by Charles Knox, director of public safety/superintendent of police of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey:
I offer my deepest apologies to Whitney Houston, her family including her husband Bobby Brown and her staff members for the unfortunate and unwarranted stoppage of their vehicle at John F. Kennedy International Airport on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Both the Port Authority Police and Ms. Houston have always agreed this incident was clearly a case of mistaken identity. But, upon further investigation undertaken at my behest, we have found that the initial police reports were erroneous in indicating that only two police officers and two police cars -- a responder and a back up -- pulled over Ms. Houston's limousine on the Van Wyck Expressway.
In fact, we have found that there were at least five police cars and at least nine officers, several of them with weapons drawn, present when the vehicle was stopped. This correlates with Ms. Houston's version of the incident.
I am continuing my investigation to determine whether the level of police response and actions during this stoppage of Ms. Houston's vehicle was within our guidelines. If disciplinary action is warranted, it will be taken.
Again, the Port Authority Police are sincerely sorry for any embarrassment, discomfort and inconvenience to those in the limousine. I called Ms. Houston's office and offered my personal apologies.
