STATE SHOWDOWN CALIFORNIA, FLORIDA PREPS PLAY TONIGHT.

Byline: Fred J. Robledo Staff Writer

PASADENA - They managed to stay at the same hotel without incident. They sat in the same restaurants and attended the same charity benefits. Now it's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Campaigning on the perceived need for change after 23 years of conservative (Liberal Party of Australia) government, Labor put forward a  for the players to battle in what many consider the most attractive high school all-star football game in the nation.

Designed to end years of debate over which state boasts the most talented players, California and Florida's best prep football standouts will meet at 7 tonight in the inaugural CaliFlorida Bowl at the Rose Bowl.

California has already proven its dominance over Texas, another of the nation's prep-talent hotbeds. California beat Texas for the sixth straight year in last month's Shrine All-Star Football Classic in Cerritos.

Florida coach David Wilson David Wilson may refer to:

  • David Wilson (sportsman) (born 1967), Australian rugby union footballer and cricketer
  • David Wilson (swimmer), Australian swimmer
marveled at the history of the Rose Bowl earlier this week. But he admits his team is here to defend Florida football's reputation, not get caught up in tradition.

``California has proven its dominance over Texas, so we're another measuring stick for them,'' said Wilson. ``But this is a measuring stick for Florida football, too. We have talked about this game a long time. And we have talked about leaving here victorious.''

It's a meeting many can't wait to see.

``With the emergence of Florida as a power in football, I think this will be far and away the marquee game in the nation,'' said Chuck Price of Air 7 Sports, tonight's chief sponsor. ``There are so many all-star games out there. We didn't want this to be just another game. With this event, at least 95 percent of the kids will be going to Division I colleges.''

Rix was the first four year starter at quarterback in the school's history under coach Bobby Bowden. , formerly of Bishop Amat, who's headed to Florida State.

Florida's all-star team features 6-foot-5, 225-pound linebacker Eric Moore Eric Moore is a former Australian rules football player who played in the VFL between 1966 and 1972 for the Richmond Football Club and then from mid-1972 until mid-1973 for the South Melbourne Football Club.  (Florida State) as well as quarterback Dominic Dunbar, who prepped at Manatee High in Bradenton, Fla.

Wink Barnett, director of the Florida Athletics Coaches Association, hopes this all-star event sets the standard.

``The entire state of Florida is extremely excited about being involved with this event,'' said Barnett. ``We hope to build a long-term relationship and rivalry with California.''

California coach Gene Vollnogle said earlier in the week that his players would have to be dead not to get excited about tonight's game. He was right.

``They said we couldn't beat Texas and look what we did to them,'' said Williams. ``Now we want to find out who the real champion is. It's a big thing. You want to be able to say when you play football

in California, you come from the best.''
