STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS: SANDLIN LOOKS FOR STATE WIN; MOORPARK SET TO HOST JC CHAMPIONSHIPS TODAY.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

This isn't even close to what Chuck Sandlin envisioned when he learned he could end his junior college wrestling career with a title at home.

Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California.  is hosting the state championships for the first time today. Sandlin could still win a title, but after the setbacks experienced by his Raiders this season, it won't be a team title.

``It's really heartbreaking,'' the sophomore said. ``We wanted to win back-to-back state championships and we could have done it. We would have had the best team.

``I think we were better than last year, a lot better.''

The Raiders won their 19th Western State Conference championship last season in addition to their third state title of the decade. Sandlin returned as the defending state champion in the 184-pound weight class. He was joined by All-Americans Juan Roman and Scott Erickson

Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Regionals. Moorpark was without seven of its athletes at the regionals - six with injuries and one because of academic ineligibility. And the Raiders realize a team title is no longer within reach.

``No, not after what's happened to us,'' coach Paul Keysaw said.

``We're definitely disappointed,'' Sandlin said. ``It's unbelievable, incredible. I'm just lucky I stayed healthy.''

Individual success is the only thing left.

``It's pretty much a sense of individualism now,'' Sandlin said. ``Everybody just knows they're working for themselves and not the team anymore.''

Armando Torres took second at the 133-pound level and Melkon Melkonian placed third in the 194-pound division. ``All those guys really started doing well lately and are wrestling above what they expected to be at this year,'' Keysaw said.

``We've had to deal with a lot of adversity this year and it's obviously set us back. It's a lot to overcome. Fortunately we've had the depth to keep going.

``Hopefully we'll be in the top 10. If the individual results come, the team could follow.''

Cuesta won the WSC championship and finished second at the Northern California regional. Palomar won the Southern California regional.

Sandlin is the Raiders' best hope for an individual title and is looking forward to a possible showdown with Fresno's Jason Rozati. Rozati defeated Sandlin in overtime earlier this season while Sandlin narrowly won the last meeting between the two.

``I've been training harder than anybody,'' said Sandlin, who took up the sport as a freshman at Camarillo High. ``As soon as I win the state title, a lot of the disappointment will go away.''
