STATE ANNOUNCES $1.5 MILLION GRANT FOR SEARS WAREHOUSE IN LUZERNE COUNTY
HARRISBURG, Pa., March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- State Commerce Secretary Andrew T. Greenberg today announced the approval of a $1.5 million infrastructure grant that will enable Sears, Roebuck and Co. to locate a distribution warehouse in Luzerne County.
Sears is building a one-million-square-foot retail distribution center on the 120-acre site of the former Blue Coal strip mine operation in Hanover Township. The retailer currently uses a warehouse in Northeast Philadelphia.
"Sears is moving to a location where it can expand the size of its operation," Greenberg said. "To make this project happen, the Governor's Response Team worked with Sears to find a suitable location and to provide funding to improve the site."
The new facility will employ 350 people.
The $1.5 million grant, awarded to the Greater Wilkes-Barre Partnership, is funded through the Commerce Department's Industrial Communities Site Program (ICSP). The grant will help finance a two-mile access road, traffic signals, guardrails, and storm water drainage and sewage facilities.
Construction of the warehouse, which will serve 150 Sears stores in the northeastern United States, began last fall and is expected to be completed later this year.
The Industrial Communities Site Program targets blighted industrial sites for reuse by manufacturing, industrial, research and development companies. The grants may be used for land and building acquisition, renovation, demolition and clearance.
