Mann's Chinese is one of 10 venues hosting the festival, which runs through Oct. 31 and will feature 90 films from 40 countries. Other screening locations include the General Cinema Galaxy theaters near Mann's Chinese and the Laemmle Monica in Santa Monica.

Highlights of the festival:

The directorial debut of Anjelica Huston, who is expected to attend the screening of her film ``Bastard Out of Carolina,'' a film about growing up poor and abused in the 1950s South. Between the 4 and 9:30 p.m. showings of the film at Mann's Chinese on Wednesday, Huston herself will be feted with a 7:30 p.m. tribute that includes an on-stage interview.

Actress Gena Rowlands - wife of the late film pioneer John Cassavetes and mother of director Nick Cassavetes - will also be honored with a 7:10 p.m. tribute on Tuesday at Mann's Chinese. The tribute will follow a 4 p.m. screening of her son's ``Unhook the Stars,'' in which Rowlands stars as a widow.

A screening of the oldest surviving American feature film, the newly restored ``Richard III,'' which was made in 1912. The screening is at 8 p.m. at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and marks the first public viewing of the Shakespearean drama in 80 years.

Special tributes will be held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills and California State University, Long Beach.
