The moment was bittersweet bittersweet, name for two unrelated plants, belonging to different families, both fall-fruiting woody vines sometimes cultivated for their decorative scarlet berries. .

``My heart goes out to the family of those who put their lives on the line every day,'' the star of ``The Patriot'' and ``Braveheart'' told the small crowd gathered at a Santa Monica hotel.

On April 29, 33-year-old March - a seven-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department - was gunned down during a traffic stop, and the suspect is still at large. Rewards totaling $60,000 have been posted for his capture.

Overcome by emotion, Terri March told the crowd that the scholarship comes as a relief since she and her husband had spent a great deal of time talking about and planning for their daughter's future.

Gibson hugged Kayla, and the teen's mother spoke of the plans she and March had for their daughter.

``It's a great thrill in such a dark time in my life,'' said Terri March, trying hard to hold back tears. ``We had deep conversations on Kayla's future and how to save money. When he left, I was confused on how to be a mom and a dad in her life.''

Kayla said she plans to spend the money to study to become a veterinarian veterinarian /vet·er·i·nar·i·an/ (vet?er-i-nar´e-an) a person trained and authorized to practice veterinary medicine and surgery; a doctor of veterinary medicine.

``I want to become a veterinarian and go to Orlando, Fla., to Gatorland,'' Kayla said. ``I would love to work on gators. A lot of people don't like helping gators because they think they'll bite them.''

March's sister Erin Hildreth, there with her 5-month-old son Jake, said she was happy about the educational opportunities that the scholarship would provide for Kayla.

``It's terrific motivation for Kayla. She's in the sixth grade now, and at that age you're so young,'' Hildreth said. ``This is a great thing to get her directed. It's a hard thing for families to go through, and this'll be a huge help when the time comes Adv. 1. when the time comes - at the appropriate time; "we'll get to this question in due course"

Baca said he hoped the media attention would remind people of March's sacrifice and help find the suspect in the case.

``It's to let the public know how truly good Deputy David March is, a wonderful human being, and that this scholarship money for his daughter is something he would want,'' he said.

``And, a suspect is at large and we want the public to know this.''

The Sheriff's Department Star Organization is a nonprofit charitable agency founded by Baca late last year to honor any current or retired employee of the department and their dependents by providing academic and financial relief in times of hardship.

Gibson said he was proud to be its spokesman.

``If I can lend my name to this rather than simply promoting myself, that's a good thing,'' he said.

When she heard the news that Gibson would be presenting her with the bond, Kayla said she was overcome with mixed emotions.

``First I thought, Mel Gibson! Wow! but then I remembered the cause,'' she said. ``Then it occurred to me what cause this was for, and I was sad.''
