Giving himself a solid tongue-lashing, Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth Starr

The university's location overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is adjacent to the city limits of Malibu.  campus in the hills above Malibu, where students and faculty had been basking in their good fortune in hiring a GOP big gun, school officials said they were disappointed - but willing to wait.

Starr said he had informed Pepperdine University that he will ``continue as independent counsel, and will assume no duties or responsibilities as dean at Pepperdine, until the investigation and any resulting prosecutions . . . have been substantially completed.''

Starr's announcement comes after a nearly five-day harangue against him by formerly friendly conservative commentators in the nation's editorial pages. Columnist William Safire William L. Safire (born December 17, 1929) is an American author, semi-retired columnist, and former journalist and presidential speechwriter.

Starr seemed flummoxed by the stir he had caused, saying he had originally thought it appropriate to take over as dean at Pepperdine on Aug. 1. But after consultation with colleagues and friends, Starr said, he had rethought the importance of his role and now believes public confidence in the investigation requires him to stay on.

``There was a fairly broad-based sense that I had made a mistake,'' he said.

Starr said he is anxious to correct assumptions that his departure signified sig·ni·fied

``If a message was inadvertently sent, the message has been corrected,'' he said.

When asked whether he was disappointed that he won't be leaving Washington, D.C., this summer for Pepperdine - known for the blinding beauty of its Malibu campus and its conservative Christian slant - Starr said he felt more humbled than anything else. But he also expressed regret over any effect the turmoil has had on his family, particularly his children.

Starr said he still looks forward to working at Pepperdine, but is not sure when he will be free to move.

``Pepperdine has been marvelous in its understanding in this situation and its graciousness,'' Starr said.

Jim McGoldrick, a law professor at Pepperdine who once co-taught a summer session course with Starr, said he and his colleagues were disappointed to learn of Starr's change of heart Friday.

``I understand, but I was looking forward to making the transition to a new dean and a new sense of leadership for the faculty and students,'' McGoldrick said. ``I certainly don't mind waiting for him to come.''

But there is some sentiment on campus that Starr may never end up at Pepperdine.

``He's the type of guy who, if they got a Republican president, he could get appointed to some judgeship or something,'' said second-year law student Samuel Ledwitz. ``I think Pepperdine was just a stop on his way.''

University spokesman Jeff Bliss said he assumes current dean Ronald F. Phillips will remain at the helm until Starr is ready to leave Washington. Phillips told university administrators last year that he was ready to step down.
