STARLING MAKES HERSELF AT HOME.

For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

as she strode down the administration building's hallways. Moments earlier, Taylor and Donovan had been discussing their dire need for an inside player.

Forward Shacauna Woods had similar thoughts the first time she saw Starling. Before the coaches had a chance to say a word, Woods sent Starling to the basketball office to meet Taylor and sign up for a tryout.

``We were thinking that we were short one post player,'' Taylor said. ``We saw Mariqueta and looked at the kid and wondered why she doesn't play basketball here. The next thing I know, somebody taps me on the shoulder, and I turn around, and it's her.''

Starling was no basketball newcomer. The three-time All-Moore League selection at Jordan High of Long Beach moved to Lancaster to live with her grandmother after graduation.

``I didn't want to go to school in Long Beach - it had nothing to do with basketball, coming out here,'' Starling said. ``I didn't even know Antelope Valley had a team. I thought it was best for me instead of kicking it with my friends. There's only one mall and one theater (in the area). There's not a lot of options.''

There are a lot of choices for Starling next season in basketball. She has attracted scholarship interest from San Jose San Jose, city, United States

Antelope Valley (14-2), which had not won a tournament in 21 years, started with school-best 7-0 record and is ranked fifth in the state.

``She an interesting type of player,'' Taylor said. ``She is a true post player who can spot up and hit an open shot. She is a good free-throw shooter who can play a small power forward. Her best strength is running the court, and she does it every well.''

Among Starling's best friends is sophomore guard Brittany Bolds. Starling and Bolds met in English class before discovering they would be basketball teammates.

Starling and Bolds bonded quickly when they learned their birthdays were six days apart and that they shared similar backgrounds as Antelope Valley transplants. Bolds, who attended Desert High of Edwards AFB AFB

``We have so much in common,'' Bolds said. ``We just made that connection as Capricorns. About everyone who meets us thinks we're easy to get along with.''

Starling has grown very fond of the Antelope Valley and convinced her mother to move to Palmdale.

``I can't get used to it being constantly cold in the morning and raining at a drop a dime,'' Starling said. ``But I like the quietness at night and being able to look at the stars. I've made a lot of friends, and it will be hard next season to leave them behind.''
