VALENCIA - The timeless story of Shakespeare's ``Romeo and Juliet'' has been offered in many settings and many periods of history, so it's no stretch to picture the classic tragedy set this time in the 1970s in Northern Ireland Northern Ireland: see Ireland, Northern.

The production will be a celebration of Irish culture with traditional Irish folk songs and dancing in addition to the tragic romance of the original, said drama adviser Stephen Whelan, who is directing the production and chose its setting.

A scene from the play recently was named Best Scene at Chapman University's 29th annual Henry Kemp Blair Shakespeare Tournament. Valencia won the second-place Outstanding Scene award last year.

``Congratulations for such a well-rehearsed and well-performed 'Romeo and Juliet,''' wrote tournament host David Coombs David Coombs is an author and historian. Former editor of the Antique Collector's magazine, he was a columnist for the UK's authoritative weekly trade paper, Antiques Gazette [1]. , a Shakespearean scholar, lecturer and director. ``Without doubt, it really did deserve the Best Scene award.''

``Romeo and Juliet'' will be staged at 7 p.m. March 17-20 in the campus theater, 27801 N. Dickason Drive, Valencia. There also will be a 2 p.m. matinee on March 20.
