 will conduct three of the eight productions in this, L.A. Opera's 20th anniversary season, which will also feature collaborations with director Julie Taymor, composer Elliot Goldenthal Elliot Goldenthal (born May 2 1954 in Brooklyn, New York City) is an acclaimed American composer of contemporary classical music. He was a student of Aaron Copland and John Corigliano, and is best known for his ability to blend various musical styles and techniques in original and  and the opera directing debut of filmmaker and ``Happy Days'' creator Garry Marshall.

Director Robert Wilson, whose ``Madama Butterfly'' broke box office records in 2004, will helm a production of Wagner's ``Parsifal'' with company artistic director Placido Domingo in the title role. Wilson's staging of ``Butterfly'' also returns.

Offenbach's comic operetta operetta (ŏpərĕt`ə), type of light opera with a frivolous, sentimental story, often employing parody and satire and containing both spoken dialogue and much light, pleasant music.  ``The Grand Duchess,'' in a new adaptation by Marshall (``Pretty Woman,'' ``The Princess Diaries''), opens the 2005-06 season Sept. 10 and plays until Oct. 1. Marshall also directs the production, which features Frederica von Stade Frederica von Stade (June 1, 1945), is an American mezzo-soprano. Born in Somerville, New Jersey, she acquired the nickname Flicka in her childhood. Miss von Stade attended the Mannes College of Music in New York City. , Constance Hauman and Rodney Gilfry. Also in September is the revival of Franco Zeffirelli's production of Leoncavallo's ``Pagliacci'' (Sept. 11-Oct. 1).

Nagano conducts the revival of Puccini's ``Tosca'' directed by Ian Judge and with Violetta Urmana in the title role (Nov. 19-Dec. 18). ``Parsifal,'' with direction, design and lighting by Wilson, plays Nov. 26-Dec. 17.

The 2006 part of the season opens with the return of Wilson's ``Madama Butterfly'' for nine performances (Jan. 21-Feb. 19). Patricia Racette and Marcus Haddock head the cast. Nagano conducts Mozart's ``The Marriage of Figaro'' (March 25-April 9), also directed by Judge with Ildar Abdrazakov, Barbara Bonney and Lucy Schaufer.

Taymor, the director of Broadway's ``The Lion King'' and the film ``Frida,'' collaborates with Goldenthal (an Oscar winner for ``Frida'') on the world premiere of ``Grendel.'' A comic retelling re·tell·ing

 of the Beowulf epic from the monster's point of view, the production will feature Eric Owens in the title role as well as Denyce Graves and Jay Hunter Morris. Taymor and former ``Lion King'' collaborator Michael Curry will also design puppets and masks for the production, which runs May 27-June 11.

The season concludes with Marta Domingo's production of Verdi's ``La Traviata'' featuring Elizabeth Futral as Violetta (June 7-24).

Single-night events include concerts by Cecilia Bartoli (Oct. 10) and Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Jan. 15, 2006).
