STANFORD, UCLA TO GO AT IT AGAIN UCLA 11, LMU 2.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer

It's only the second year the NCAA NCAA
abbr.
National Collegiate Athletic Association
has held a women's water polo championship tournament, but the results are becoming old hat - UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
 and Stanford dominating the semifinals.

Teams such as Loyola Marymount like to think the gap between their conference and UCLA and Stanford's conference has narrowed. LMU's goalie even went as far as to say the gap could close in just two years.

On Saturday at McDonald's Swim Stadium on the USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  campus, the gap looked as wide as ever.

11-2 after Stanford routed Michigan 13-3. The top-ranked and second-seeded Bruins (22-3) again will face the top-seeded and second-ranked Cardinal (22-2) today at 5 p.m. for the national title. The teams met last year, with the Bruins winning on a last-minute goal.

UCLA's size, depth and strength proved too much for the Lions (20-8), who won the Western Water Polo Association The Western Water Polo Association is a conference of colleges and universities in the western United States that compete in water polo. Schools competing in the WWPA

for the second consecutive year and will try to finish third in the nation again when they play Michigan (25-12) at 3:30 p.m. today.

The Bruins scored two quick goals and cruised to a 6-0 halftime lead. LMU didn't attempt a shot until 6 minutes, 7 seconds had elapsed e·lapse

Seven players scored goals for UCLA, led by Kelly Heuchen's three. Amber Stachowski and Ashley Stachowski scored two goals apiece and Thalia Munro stole the ball from LMU goalie Devon Courtney and scored once.

LMU coach John Loghran said the Lions wanted to avoid setting up a 2-meter offense in front of UCLA's Robin Beauregard, a former Olympian, but the Bruins simply rotated defenders in and out without a drop in quality.

Stanford's offense also ran smoothly and led 7-0 at the half. Seven players scored, with sophomore Brenda Villa getting four goals, including one on a penalty shot.

It's not as if UCLA doesn't welcome better competition. Beauregard said she sometimes gets tired of facing Stanford. Before the NCAA sanctioned the sport, UCLA won four National Collegiate Women's Water Polo titles, beating Cal three times and USC once. USC beat Stanford in 1999.

``They still have some time to go before they catch up with us,'' UCLA coach Adam Krikorian said. ``If you look at what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. Released on May 21, 1971 (see 1971 in music), What's Going On reflected the beginning of a new trend in soul music.  in the youth levels, there's a ton of great players out there. We'll do our best to stay above it all, but it's going to be hard.''
