STAGE.

Byline: - Evan Henerson

As usual, there will be plenty of summer Shakespeare to satisfy classically minded palates, from Theatricum Botanicum's ``Winter's Tale'' to a visiting production of ``Richard III'' courtesy of the Acting Company. Shakespeare Festival/LA is staging the comedy ``Twelfth Night,'' which, given the frequency of local productions over the past year, might better be called ``Twelfth Time.''

I'm looking forward to seeing the Geffen take up residence at its temporary new home, the Brentwood Theatre on the VA grounds, with the Alberta Hunter musical ``Cookin' at the Cookery.'' I'm similarly jazzed over the July import of ``A Little Night Music,'' with its starry cast intact ... although not quite as jazzed as I would have been had original headliners Jeremy Irons and Juliet Stevenson come along for the ride (their replacements are Victor Garber and Judith Ivey).

New York New York, state, United States

has just handed out its Tony Awards. Following the old ``one year behind'' rule (when we're lucky), L.A. will finally see 2003's best musical, ``Hairspray'' in July with original star - and Tony winner - Marissa Jaret Winokur, and Bruce Vilanch. That show's director, Jack O'Brien, meanwhile, will be readying his next blockbuster musical for Broadway. That would be ``Dirty Rotten Scoundrels'' which conducts its out-of-town tryout in September in San Diego starring John Lithgow.

But that's not until fall. We'll talk again then. Until then, happy theater going.
