STADTLANDERS SURVEY RANKS TEN MOST ACTIVE ORGAN TRANSPLANT CENTERS
PITTSBURGH, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Stadtlanders Lifetime(R) pharmacy program today released results of its Stadtlanders Survey, ranking the ten most active organ transplant centers in the United States.
This is the first time that statistics have been compiled to rank the most active transplant centers in the United States.
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center ranks first in the Stadtlanders Survey with 736 organ transplants performed during 1991. Other top programs include the UCLA Medical Center with 406 transplants, Medical Center at the University of California-San Francisco (347), Ohio State University Hospitals in Columbus (324) and University of Alabama at Birmingham (312).
Completing the list of ten most active centers are California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco (305), Transplant Center at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics in Minneapolis (300), University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison (299), University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor (243) and Emory Transplant Center in Atlanta (240).
Together, the ten centers in the Stadtlanders Survey performed 3,512 transplants during 1991, 22 percent of all such operations performed in the United States. The totals include all kidney, kidney/pancreas, heart, heart/lung, lung, liver and pancreas transplants. (Detailed statistics and profiles of each of the ten centers are included in the chart.)
"The Stadtlanders Survey shows that miracles are being performed daily in leading transplant centers in every region of the country," said Gregg Perelman, president of Stadtlanders Lifetime pharmacy program. "Behind each of these patient numbers is a story of great human courage and triumph."
The survey also points out the continuing critical need for organ donors.
"Generous organ donor families and living-related donors make these miracles possible. But yet more than 26,000 children and adults are currently waiting for transplants," Perelman added. "I encourage everyone to give the precious gift of life by filling out an organ donor card and discussing their wishes with their family."
Stadtlanders Survey rankings are based on information from the transplant centers and cross-referenced with information compiled in "1991 Clinical Transplants" published by the UCLA Tissue Typing Laboratory.
