STAAR SURGICAL COMPANY'S TORIC(TM) LENS APPROVED IN AUSTRALIA

MONROVIA, Calif., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- STAAR Surgical Company (NASDAQ: STAA) announced the approval of its TORIC(TM) lens for clinical studies in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration ("TGA"), the regulatory agency for Australian pharmaceuticals and devices. This approval is in addition to the previously announced approval by the Australian TGA (May 4, 1993) for the general distribution of the company's ELASTIC(TM) and ELASTIMIDE(TM) lenses.
The STAAR TORIC(TM) lens, one of several new STAAR products being introduced to the international market this year, specifically addresses the problem of astigmatism in the estimated 25 percent of all cataract patients who have some degree of pre-existing astigmatism.
The TORIC(TM) IOL has a second optic superimposed on the underlying general optic zone which corrects for the astigmatism. STAAR's TORIC(TM) lens is a patented product and is proprietary to STAAR Surgical Company.
"To date, there have been approximately 60 human implants within the United States alone, all with outstanding results," stated John R. Wolf, president and CEO.
"One of our primary growth objectives is to capitalize on STAAR's technological edge in the IOL market to enter the larger vision care market. Our TORIC(TM) lens represents the first in a series of new product innovations expected over the next five years which will broaden our product offerings in this area."
STAAR Surgical Company, a publicly traded company founded in 1982, develops, manufactures and markets products for micro incision ophthalmic surgery, primarily for use in cataract procedures. All of STAAR's primary products are approved by the FDA.
