ST. NICK AND D.C.-AREA CHILDREN JOIN FORCES TO COLLECT TOYS FOR TOYS FOR TOTS

ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 19 ~PRNewswire~ -- Today in Arlington, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and national Toys for Tots sponsor MCI Telecommunications Corporation hosted a holiday extravaganza as part of the second annual MCI
Friends & Family Holiday Tour. A visit from Santa Claus highlighted the festivities to help the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve raise awareness of -- and ultimately donations for -- the 45th annual Toys for Tots toy-raising effort.
Lt. Gov. Donald Beyer, radio personality Beverly Fox of W-LITE radio, Santa, MCI representatives and local area children participated in the holiday program and made the first official toy donation of 1992 -- a "Tower of Toys" -- to the area's needy children.
Beyer also delivered a proclamation from Gov. Douglas Wilder's office supporting Toys for Tots in the state of Virginia.
For the first time ever, MCI and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation have created two new and simple donation methods this year: Gift givers may send a check or money order in any amount to the Toys for Tots Foundation, P.O. Box 1931, Amherst, N.Y. 14226; Or dial 900-945-1000 to make an automatic donation of $10. (Callers will be billed $10 per call. Proceeds will be used to purchase toys for needy children.)
"Last year, with help from generous national sponsors like MCI, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve collected millions of toys for kids nationwide," said Brig. Gen. Jeffrey W. Oster, USMC. "This holiday season, we hope to surpass our goal of collecting 8 million toys."
"By delivering gifts to Toys for Tots kids in 12 cities and creating simple ways for people everywhere to support Toys for Tots, we hope to encourage holiday shoppers to put one more name on their holiday list this year -- the name of a needy child somewhere," said Gerald Taylor, president of MCI Consumer Markets.
The local Toys for Tots kickoff at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City is the 11th stop on the 12-city MCI Friends & Family Holiday Tour. The tour includes the following stops: Los Angeles, Oct. 14; San Francisco, Oct. 16; Phoenix, Oct. 19; Denver, Oct. 23; Dallas, Oct. 27; Houston, Oct. 28; Memphis, Nov. 5; Atlanta, Nov. 10; Chicago, Nov. 12; Detroit, Nov. 17; and New York City, Nov. 24.
The MCI Friends & Family Holiday Tour" helps the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve raise awareness -- and ultimately new, unwrapped toys -- for children everywhere.
