ST. MARTIN'S PRESS STATEMENT ON RANDY SHILTS

NEW YORK, Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- St. Martin's press today released the following:
Randy Shilts' announcement that he has AIDS comes at an especially poignant time.
Already recognized as the most important and widely read writer in the world about AIDS and gay-related subjects, Randy's fame and impact are scheduled to increase mightily within a matter of months. His two earlier books, "The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk" and "And The Band Played On" are to be released as movies. And this spring, St. Martin's Press will publish his next work, "Conduct Unbecoming: Gays and Lesbians in the U.S. Military," which promises to be one of the most influential books of our time.
A masterwork of history and advocacy, spanning three decades and based on five years of interviews with over a thousand people both in and out of the armed services, "Conduct Unbecoming" will inform and enlighten the current debate. We also believe its revelations are so powerful that it will become the fundamental document of the controversy surrounding gays in the military and will have a profound effect on the nation's decisions this summer.
Working with Randy Shilts has been, and is, a deeply gratifying experience for everyone here at St. Martin's Press. For many of us he embodies the reason we came into publishing. We admire him. We respect him. And we wish him well.
