ST. LUCIE NUCLEAR UNIT 1 BEGINS REFUELING

HUTCHINSON ISLAND, Fla., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida Power & Light Company's St. Lucie Nuclear Unit 1 was removed from service Sunday night (3/28) for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage.
Over the past 18 months, Unit 1 has generated power 98 percent of the time as compared to the nuclear industry average of 70 percent. Refueling involves replacing 84 of the reactor's 217 uranium fuel assemblies. Each assembly is 13 feet long and 8 inches wide, containing the energy equivalent of approximately 200,000 barrels of oil.
During the refueling, workers will also conduct inspections and maintenance on components and systems.
The unit is scheduled to return to service in mid-May, and FPL anticipates no problems in meeting customer electricity demands during this refueling period.
