Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

LA CANADA - They love to run the football at St. Francis of La Canada, and they've done it successfully dating back the days when Friedman Field - the Knights' posh, artificial turf Artificial turf, or synthetic turf, is a grass-like man-made surface manufactured from synthetic materials. The Knights still run the ball well - bruisingly so again with a finally healthy Blake Milton pounding through defenders as he did for 100 yards in Friday's 28-6 season-opening win over visiting Arcadia.

Quarterback Matt Abbey completed 17 of 23 attempts for 320 yards and two touchdowns Friday, twice hooking up for scoring passes to Chris Hertz as the Knights never trailed in a convincing victory over last year's Pacific League champions.

St. Francis started out pounding with Milton, who rushed for 42 yards on the Knights' 57-yard drive to a touchdown on their first series of the season.

Then Abbey took over, throwing for 235 yards in the first half, when he completed 12 of 17, shook off a deflection deflection /de·flec·tion/ (de-flek´shun) deviation or movement from a straight line or given course, such as from the baseline in electrocardiography.

``That's a big help,'' Abbey said of having the threat of the run by Milton, who rushed for 876 yards last year despite playing most of that season with a sprained ankle A sprained ankle, also known as a ankle sprain, ankle injury or ankle ligament injury, is a common medical condition where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn. . ``He's a good runner and takes a lot of pressure off me. While the Knights were consistently effective on offense - including a second-half 33-yard touchdown connection from Abbey to Hertz - they did equally well on defense.
