ST. CHARLES PARISH PUBLIC SCHOOLS SELECTS WICAT
TO PROVIDE MULTIPLE INTEGRATED LEARNING SYSTEMS
OREM, Utah, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Wicat Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: WCAT) announced today that St. Charles Parish Public Schools (Luling, La.) has purchased a total of 2 new integrated learning systems (ILSs) and upgrades to nine existing ILSs from Wicat.
Under terms of the recently signed contract, valued at approximately $546,000, Wicat ILSs will be installed in five elementary, four middle and two high schools. A total of 667 student and teacher workstations will be available to access Wicat courseware, testware and Wicat's advanced management system, AIMS.
According to district officials, one of the primary objectives behind the Wicat purchase was to increase both student familiarity with and test scores through increased achievement on the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) exam. In addition, officials hope to reduce overall district dropout rates by targeting students who are struggling academically at every grade level and using Wicat to specifically meet their individual educational needs.
Dr. Thomas Tocco, district superintendent, is excited about the role technology can play in schools today. "There is no reason why we should not be using the technological prowess that we have in this country to benefit teachers in their attempt to provide quality education for all young people," stated Tocco. "I want to see these computer labs smoking with as much use as possible during the regular school day, afternoons, evenings, weekends and summer use."
In St. Charles Parish, young students are not the only ones who benefit from Wicat technology. The school board decided to give all citizens in the district access to the Wicat labs for a nominal fee. Adults can use Wicat in the evenings for $1 per hour to upgrade entry- level skills for job placement or to improve skills for workplace advancement, or to provide tutorial assistance for their children.
"You never really know how adults in the community will respond to a night class offering. We had to set up a waiting list almost immediately," commented Helen Banquer, manager of the community education program. "We only sent fliers home with the children. Within two days we had to add additional classes for a maximum total of four classes available in the evenings."
The district also encourages parents to spend time with their children on the Wicat system. The benefits of the system are tripled when the child and parent work together because the parent is learning at the same time as the child. In this situation, there is no additional cost.
Wicat was selected after a careful evaluation of other ILS systems. School officials indicated that Wicat products emphasized the development of higher-order thinking skills, supported prescriptive teaching, and provided context-sensitive student feedback. Overall, Wicat met the needs of the school system better than other systems evaluated.
Wicat Systems is a world leader in technology-based education, and provides products and services to significantly improve learning in schools and industry. Wicat stock is traded in the NASDAQ market under the symbol WCAT.
