Client/Server version 6.0 software, the new ERP system will be used by 850 employees throughout Britvic's production and distribution sites, replacing existing bespoke systems and resolving Britvic's potential Year 2000 problems. The new system will process bottling of Britvic's key brands including Tango, Pepsi, Robinsons and Britvic, monitoring channel demand from multiple markets through a single inventory system. The $1.5 million contract was signed in July 1997 and relates to software license fees only.

"BPCS Client/Server version 6.0 will provide us with the total business solution we need to handle all our sales, order processing and manufacturing needs, and run our bottling and warehousing operations throughout the UK," commented Britvic project manager, Martin Rose. "Using modules within the software which specifically deal with efficient consumer response Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) is a joint trade and industry body working towards making the grocery sector as a whole more responsive to consumer demand and promote the removal of unnecessary costs from the supply chain.  principles and automated distribution resource planning Distribution Resource Planning (DRP) is a method used in business administration for planning orders within a supply chain. DRP enables the user to set certain inventory control parameters (like a safety stock) and calculate the time-phased inventory requirements. , we also expect the new system to greatly improve customer service levels," he added.

Initially, BPCS Client/Server version 6.0 will be implemented in 'mixed mode' on Britvic's existing AS/400 platform, preserving the company's investment in IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  hardware. However, Bob Darby, Britvic's IT Manager, commented, "BPCS Client/Server will provide us with the flexibility to move to full Client/Server as and when the business requires." SSA's object-oriented development of BPCS Client/Server version 6.0 is also in line with Britvic's future application development plans and will facilitate the integration of the software with other systems.

Britvic reviewed SSA's ERP proposal against two other incumbent suppliers, JD Edwards and JBA (JBA International, Inc., Rolling Meadows, IL) A global developer and supplier of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for AS/400, Unix and NT platforms. Founded in 1981 as Johnston Brown Associates, in 1999, it was acquired by Canadian-based Geac Computer Corporation. , with BPCS Client/Server version 6.0 being selected for extensive evaluations alongside JD Edwards. The detailed evaluation included a scripted demonstration from both vendors, which was assessed by a panel of Britvic user representatives. "Our evaluations confirmed SSA's BPCS Client/Server version 6.0 as robust and highly flexible," commented David Woods, head of supply chain systems. "Of the two products we evaluated, BPCS Client/Server proved to be superior in functionality tests and user representatives voted unanimously for SSA (Serial Storage Architecture) A fault tolerant peripheral interface from IBM that transfers data at 80 and 160 Mbytes/sec. SSA uses SCSI commands, allowing existing software to drive SSA peripherals, which are typically disk drives. ," he added.

"BPCS Client/Server version 6.0 gives Britvic a truly global perspective on its business processes," commented Tano Rebora, SSA's UK Country Manager. "Our Semantic Message Gateways make communications with other packages very straightforward, which will enable Britvic to plan future system and application integration without restrictions or complications," he added.
