SSA Announces Object Development Workbench.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 14, 1995--System Software Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ
in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations

U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on
: SSAX SSAX Soprano Saxophone ) today announced three new object-oriented application development products that are the first in a series that will form a new family of object-oriented application development tools called the Object Development Workbench (ODW ODW Office of Drinking Water (US EPA)
ODW Oak Harbor, WA, USA (Airport Code)
ODW Operation Day's Work
ODW Organizational Development Worldwide
ODW OnDemand Wrestling, Inc.
).

ODW implements a new object-oriented architecture developed by SSA (Serial Storage Architecture) A fault tolerant peripheral interface from IBM that transfers data at 80 and 160 Mbytes/sec. SSA uses SCSI commands, allowing existing software to drive SSA peripherals, which are typically disk drives.  called the Distributed Object Distributed objects are software modules that are designed to work together, but reside either in multiple computers connected via a network or in different processes inside the same computer.  Computing Architecture (DOCA DOCA

). SSA also disclosed today the details of DOCA in a new publication which is available to the general public (see separate press release -- same dateline). The three object-oriented development tools are available for sale as general purpose application development tools.

The new object-oriented tools are intended for use by software teams who are engaged in the development of enterprise-wide, mission-critical applications. The three tools being announced as part of the ODW family today, along with other not yet released tools, are being used by SSA in the implementation of BPCS BPCS Business Planning and Control System

BPCS Basic Process Control System
BPCS Base/Post/Camp/Station
BPCS Broadband Personal Communications System (FCC)
Client/Server, SSA's enterprise business application suite. SSA has already shipped several financial applications using the tools. Additional BPCS Client/Server products are under development with the tools and will be released in the future.

ODW is a family of application development products that includes: (1) a specification layer in which all business objects are defined; (2) a repository into which the business objects are stored in platform-independent form; (3) a generation layer which generates platform-specific code from the business objects repository; and (4) the deployment layer.

SSA announced that in December 1995 it will ship the first in the set of application development tools that implement the new object-oriented architecture and that are part of the Object Development Workbench (ODW) family. The new tools include Object Definition Facility (ODF (OpenDocument Format) See OpenDocument. ), Object Repository, and Gen/C++ for Windows.

ODF implements the Specification layer of the architecture. It is at this level that the application, independent of a specific platform, is defined. The output of ODF is a set of business objects that completely specifies the application. ODF stores the business objects in the Object Repository. ODF and the Object Repository will be released on Windows NT. In the December release ODF will support the specification of client applications.

Based upon the business objects stored in the Object Repository, Gen/C++ for Windows generates executable object-oriented code for a Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 environment.

Roger Covey, SSA Chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , said: "SSA embraced objects several years ago when we began investing in the design of a new architecture, and building tools and applications based on a full implementation of object-oriented methodologies and technologies. That strategy is now bearing fruit. With the tools that we are announcing today, and that we use internally for our own application development, we can build applications more quickly, for more platforms, and with more inherent flexibility than any of our competitors. We have already shipped several application class libraries in the area of financials and will announce several more for financials, supply chain, and manufacturing in the near future."

Riz Shakir, SSA's Vice President of Architecture, said: "We have designed ODW to address the pragmatic issues involved in delivering object-oriented enterprise applications. The dual advantage of active participation in standards groups such as the OMG (1) See Object Management Group.

Each of the three component products (ODF, Object Repository, and Gen/C++ for Windows) is priced at $2,500 per user.

SSA's CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global  conformant object oriented software development tool set allows the production of platform independent client/server applications.
