SS8 Networks Tackles Lawful Intercept For IMS; SS8 Networks Takes the Lead In LI Solutions for Emerging IMS-based Networks.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- SS8 Networks, the leading provider of Lawful Intercept solutions for telecommunication service providers, announced today that it has developed solutions to help carriers address regulatory requirements for the emerging IP Multimedia Subsystem An integrated network for telecommunications carriers that uses the IP protocol as its foundation for packetized voice, video and data. Supporting voice over IP (VoIP) in all its flavors (SIP, H.323, MGCP, etc.  (IMS (1) See IP Multimedia Subsystem.

(2) (Information Management System) An early IBM hierarchical DBMS for IBM mainframes. IMS was widely implemented throughout the 1970s under MVS and continues to be used under z/OS.
) based networks. Leveraging the power of the Session Initiation Protocol (protocol) Session Initiation Protocol - (SIP) A very simple text-based application-layer control protocol. It creates, modifies, and terminates sessions with one or more participants. Such sessions include Internet telephony and multimedia conferences.

It is described in RFC 2543.
(SIP), SS8 Networks can now provide intercept capabilities in IMS-oriented service delivery architectures.

"As service providers deploy IMS-based networks, and start implementing the converged wireline/wireless services for residential and commercial customers, they need solutions that enable them to comply with federal mandates for security, accountability and authentication," said Dr. Cemal Dikmen, General Manager of SS8 Networks' Lawful Intercept business. "SS8 Networks continues to work with leading carriers and equipment vendors to deliver these LI solutions as part of next-generation IMS-based networks."

IMS is a standardized reference architecture, designed to enable telecommunications service providers to offer a broad range of SIP-based services across packet networks to any customer - fixed or wireless. IMS promises viable fixed/mobile convergence, and is touted as a way for carriers to launch new services more quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. Several large wireline and wireless service providers such as AT&T, BellSouth and Cingular, have announced plans to develop and launch a broad range of new personalized voice, video, data and multimedia services based on the IMS architecture. By providing a standards-based lawful intercept function for this IMS architecture, SS8 Networks will enable carriers to simultaneously meet CALEA CALEA Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (Fairfax, Virginia)
CALEA Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act of 1994
CALEA Communication Assistance to Low Enforcement Act
obligations while enhancing and migrating service offerings.

SS8 Networks' Xcipio(TM) architecture leverages SIP to now provide equivalent LI capabilities in both circuit-switched and IMS networks. In the IMS-based network, Xcipio receives SIP signaling traffic from the CSCF CSCF Call Session Control Function

media traffic from the SBC (1) (SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, TX, www.sbc.com) A large, national telecommunications company that grew from a multitude of local and regional companies, including Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell, into a single, unified brand by 2002.  (Session Border Controller A Session Border Controller is a device used in some VoIP networks to exert control over the signaling and usually also the media streams involved in setting up, conducting, and tearing down calls. ). Xcipio interprets the messages, correlates them with a specific warrant and sends the SIP signaling and RTP voice streams to the collection function nodes at law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. This may be a local or state police, federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).  (per ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC.  T1.678 protocol). Xcipio can simultaneously receive traffic from several CSCF nodes in a network thereby reducing operational complexities for the service provider.

"Carriers and service providers are now insisting on compliance with the IMS specification for their entire infrastructure requirement, including a viable lawful intercept solution," said Joe McGarvey, Principal Analyst, Current Analysis. "SS8 Networks' SIP-based Xcipio platform enables carriers to continue to comply with CALEA requirements as they migrate to IMS-based infrastructures to deliver packet voice and other IP services."

About Xcipio
