SQUIRES WARNS AGAINST `HO-HUM' ATTITUDE TODAY; AGAINST MENLO, CLU WILL WORK ON ATTACK.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Running back George Keiaho is expected to get a chance to rest his pulled hamstring, but don't expect the Cal Lutheran football team to change much else about its approach today. The nonconference contest at Menlo does nothing for the Kingsmen's conference-title or postseason hopes but is a valuable chance for CLU (language) CLU - (CLUster) An object-oriented programming language developed at MIT by Liskov et al in 1974-1975.

to sharpen its attack before next week's game that does mean something.

``We only get nine games, so every game is important,'' CLU coach Scott Squires said. ``It just so happens this one comes in week eight. I tell the kids they have to be up every game, no matter what it means. It's not a ho-hum kind of deal.''

The last of three consecutive road games is an opportunity for the Kingsmen (3-4) to regroup re·group

Getting the offense started earlier is key since failing to produce first-half touchdowns the past two weeks meant counting on big second halves. Cutting down on penalties is something the Kingsmen have stressed all season - they've been penalized pe·nal·ize

for an average of 81.7 yards a game - and are more aware of them than ever after last week's costly penalty for celebrating in the final seconds of regulation.

Quarterback Chris Czernek, who has been intercepted nine times, did not have an interception last week and is getting better at running the option. However, he is often left just throwing to open space as defenses quickly approach, and he has yet to prove he can consistently throw for much distance.

The Oaks (4-3) have a defense similar to the one CLU faced last week at La Verne. The eight-man front should provide consistent pressure and make running difficult, but the Kingsmen proved more successful than most against La Verne's nationally ranked defense, rushing for 132 net yards, more than triple what the Leopards normally allow.

Keiaho's injury means fellow running back Dorian Stitt will be counted on even more than usual. Stitt, who averages 81.1 yards rushing a game and is tied with Keiaho for the team lead in touchdowns at five, limped off the field himself during the first overtime period Noun 1. overtime period - a period of overtime play to resolve a tie; e.g. basketball

Stitt later returned and the CLU staff said he is fine. But even when Stitt is not at full strength, he is difficult to stop as he proved earlier in the season when he ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns in CLU's 31-21 win against Claremont.

The Kingsmen defense doesn't get much of a break after facing a La Verne offense that produced 456 net yards. CAL LUTHERAN vs. MENLO

Kickoff: 1 p.m., at Connor Stadium

Records: CLU 3-4; Menlo 4-3.

Outlook: CLU tunes up for its big season finale against Redlands with a nonconference contest against a program on the rise. The game won't affect standings, but the desire to finish the season above .500 keeps the Kingsmen's intensity high. Even though he missed the PAT that would have clinched a victory last week, CLU junior place-kicker Ryan Geisler moved up to first in the Division III

national rankings in field goals made per game (1.57 avg.) with 11 in 13 attempts. Senior punter Mark Kevern moved up from 15th to fourth in the nation with a 40.93 average. On Menlo's side, a strong defense and high-scoring offense led by the junior quarterback duo of Zamir Amin and Steve Christie make the Oaks competitive a season after going 2-8. CLU leads the series against the independent team 4-1, including a 24-21 victory in the 1998 season opener.
