It was an affair to remember as Glendale residents turned out Saturday for the Adams Square Summer A'Faire.

Sponsored by the Adams Square Merchants Association, the sixth annual fair included live entertainment, food, dozens of vendors, and carnival carnival, communal celebration, especially the religious celebration in Catholic countries that takes place just before Lent. Since early times carnivals have been accompanied by parades, masquerades, pageants, and other forms of revelry that had their origins in  rides and games for children.

fair has brought a neighborhood together, said Carol Cianfrini, the owner of a dry-cleaning company and a member of the association.

``Years ago, no one talked to one another,'' said Cianfrini, who has been involved in the event since it started. ``Now people are more friendly; we say hello to one another. The fair has made it possible for us to be closer as a community.''

Glendale City Councilman Bob Yousefian said it also has helped attract residents to area businesses.

``This is a place where people can come in to shop, eat, have a beer and get to know what kind of businesses are here,'' said Yousefian.

Sam's Deli of Monrovia has been selling Mediterranean food at the fair for the past two years.

``Coming out here is really great for business. This is just a good way to advertise the restaurant,'' said restaurant employee Francis Homsi.

As residents mingled among the vendors, John Cianfrini, president of the association's board, said the street fair has helped revive To renew.

The Cianfrinis have owned a building in the square, along with the dry-cleaning business, for 35 years.

The square used to be the hub of a lively walking community, with an open-air market and residents within walking distance of everything they needed. But over the years, the neighborhood declined.

``When people used to ask me where I lived and what I did, I used to say I was the owner of the ghetto,'' said Cianfrini, a general contractor A general contractor is an organization or individual that contracts with another organization or individual (the owner) for the construction of a building, road or any other execution of work or facility. . ``This place really was a ghetto, but now after all these years, it's becoming a nice little neighborhood.''

Cianfrini said his community involvement began when he tried to get a broken streetlight fixed seven years ago.

``When I wasn't getting anywhere with the streetlight issue, someone told me that in order to make change, I needed to form an organization. That's when I formed the merchants association. We not only got a streetlight fixed, but we also got street improvements, help with the facade facade (fəsäd`), exterior face or wall of a building.
