SPSS Releases Enzyme Kinetics Module for SigmaPlot; Module Provides Custom Graphing Capabilities to Aid Drug Research and Discovery.Business Editors CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 2000 Expanding its solutions for the pharmaceutical industry, SPSS A statistical package from SPSS, Inc., Chicago (www.spss.com) that runs on PCs, most mainframes and minis and is used extensively in marketing research. It provides over 50 statistical processes, including regression analysis, correlation and analysis of variance. Inc. (Nasdaq: SPSS) today announced a specialized SigmaPlot module for medical researchers and life scientists. The Enzyme Kinetics Enzyme kinetics is the study of the rates of chemical reactions that are catalysed by enzymes. The study of an enzyme's kinetics provides insights into the catalytic mechanism of this enzyme, its role in metabolism, how its activity is controlled in the cell and how drugs and Module from SPSS Science extends SigmaPlot's curve fitting Curve fitting is finding a curve which matches a series of data points and possibly other constraints. This section is an introduction to both interpolation (where an exact fit to constraints is expected) and regression analysis. Both are sometimes used for extrapolation. and graphing capabilities, and includes specialized analytics and graphs tailored to the study of enzyme reactions--reactions which are widely studied in drug research and development and in the life science and medical research disciplines. The release of this module means that medical and drug researchers can use SigmaPlot 2000's award-winning graphing and curve-fitting capabilities to analyze and present enzyme kinetic kinetic /ki·net·ic/ (ki-net´ik) pertaining to or producing motion. ki·net·ic adj. Of, relating to, or produced by motion. kinetic pertaining to or producing motion. data. This is the second in a series of specialized SigmaPlot modules and is expected to ship in late September. "This module has been highly requested from our SigmaPlot customers who do enzyme kinetics research," said Rakhi Advani, marketing manager for SPSS Science. "The Enzyme Kinetics Module integrates seamlessly with the SigmaPlot 2000 environment, enabling users to perform specialized functions for enzyme kinetics analysis, while still taking advantage of SigmaPlot's powerful analytical, graphing and presentation capabilities."
New features in the Enzyme Kinetics Module include:
-- Streamlined data entry - The Data Entry Wizard provides
streamlined data entry into the SigmaPlot worksheet. Data can
be cut and pasted from other software packages or entered
manually. Replicate velocities may be entered and, for
inhibition studies, the substrate concentrations or inhibitor
concentrations can be varied for each series.
-- Built-in library of equations - The module contains 11
different equation groups with a total of 35 built-in model
types tailored to enzyme kinetic research. The customized
models improve accuracy and save tremendous amounts of time by
not requiring any equation programming.
-- Select from a wide range of graph types - Built-in graph types
including Michaelis Menten, Lineweaver Burke, Eadie Hofstee,
Dixon, Scatchard, Hanes-Woolf, Hill and more display research
data and enable more complete understanding of enzyme
reactions. SigmaPlot's graph customization feature allows
researchers to customize these graphs and present data the way
they want.
-- Comprehensive results reports - The Enzyme Kinetics Module
includes three reports--non-linear curve fit, data and model
comparison--which detail results and enable researchers to
easily evaluate which models best describe their reaction.
About SigmaPlot SigmaPlot is SPSS' award-winning scientific graphing software. SigmaPlot makes it easier for users to present their findings accurately using precise, publication-quality graphs, data analysis and presentation tools. SigmaPlot offers numerous scientific options such as automatic error bars, regression lines Noun 1. regression line - a smooth curve fitted to the set of paired data in regression analysis; for linear regression the curve is a straight line regression curve , confidence intervals confidence interval, n a statistical device used to determine the range within which an acceptable datum would fall. Confidence intervals are usually expressed in percentages, typically 95% or 99%. , axis breaks, technical axis scales, non-linear curve fitting and a data worksheet for powerful data handling. SigmaPlot is used in a wide range of fields including medical research, life sciences, chemistry, engineering, environmental science and physics.
