 SPRINT PARTICIPATES IN CONSTRUCTION OF
 FIRST TRANS-PACIFIC NETWORK
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) announced today its participation with 46 other companies to build the first undersea fiber-optic network in the Pacific Ocean.
Previously, undersea fiber-optic cables have only connected two end-points. The Trans-Pacific Cable will connect several points in a ring network -- from Oregon to California to Hawaii to Guam to Miyazaka and Ninomiya, Japan and back to Oregon. The cable will connect these sites with two sets of fibers, one for backup.
The cable will use state-of-the-art fiber-optic amplifiers, which will allow greater spacing between amplifiers and the system will allow more simultaneous phone conversations (or equivalent data) than ever before.
The majority of the undersea fiber-optic network will be operating by 1995 with work to be completed in late 1996.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $9 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
