SPRINT OFFERS FREE MILITARY CALLING FOR EIGHTH STRAIGHT YEAR
OVER MARS NETWORK FOR MEMORIAL WEEKEND
KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Thousands of military personnel will be able to call free of charge back to the United States this Memorial Day weekend via the Military Affiliates Radio System (MARS) and Sprint (NYSE: FON). It is the eighth straight year Sprint has provided this service to military personnel for holidays.
Thousands of military personnel called home for free over the recent Mother's Day weekend via Sprint and the Navy/Marine, Army and Air Force MARS systems. This weekend's free calling begins at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, May 23, and concludes at midnight PDT on Monday, May 25.
"Sprint and MARS have been working together for years to ensure military personnel around the world can speak to loved ones for free on holidays," said Chris Rooney, president of Sprint's Government Systems Division. "We feel that this is an important benefit for all involved and we are honored to be a part of it."
The program involves military personnel stationed on ships or at ground-based MARS stations around the world transmitting via radio frequencies to hundreds of MARS stations in the United States. The domestic MARS operators then patch the calls through to their destination via Sprint's fiber optic long distance lines anywhere in the United States.
In addition to providing the service free-of-charge for holidays such as Christmas, New Year's, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, and July 4th, Sprint provided free MARS calling during the entire Middle East conflict. During that period more than 100,000 calls were handled.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
