SPRINT INTRODUCES JAPANESE FONCARD AND COMPREHENSIVE CALLING PROGRAM

SPRINT INTRODUCES JAPANESE FONCARD AND COMPREHENSIVE CALLING PROGRAM
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint has introduced the first Japanese-language long distance calling card from a U.S. company as part of a comprehensive calling program designed for Japanese-speaking people living in the United States.
The Japanese FONCARD enables Japanese callers to make domestic (U.S.) and international calls, including those through the first all-digital network to Japan. Dialing instructions on the card are printed in Japanese.
"The introduction of the Japanese FONCARD demonstrates Sprint's continuing desire to match our products and services with the needs of the Japanese people in the U.S.," said Dave Schmieg, president of Sprint's Consumer Services Group. "The Japanese FONCARD and calling program are the result of our listening and responding to Japanese consumers."
In addition to the new Japanese FONCARD, Japanese customers can use Sprint WORLD, Sprint's international calling plan, to call Japan at special rates via Sprint's 100 percent digital service to that country. The entire calling program includes Japanese-speaking support personnel, as well as dialing instructions, calling program literature and advertisements printed in Japanese.
Customers who sign up for the Japanese program and Sprint WORLD will receive a credit for up to $100 on their third invoice.
Callers can use Sprint WORLD to contact Japan and 38 other countries at low per-minute rates for a monthly plan fee of just $3. On this plan, calls to Japan are just 77 cents a minute for the entire weekend -- 24 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday -- and weekdays from 8 p.m. to 2 p.m. the next day.
A 10-minute call to Japan during the standard weekend rate period would cost $14.21. The same call on Sprint WORLD's discount plan would cost $7.70 -- a savings of $6.51.
"We asked Japanese consumers what they want from a long distance company," Schmieg said. "Our program is specially designed to meet their unique needs."
Customers can apply for the Japanese FONCARD and Sprint WORLD program by calling 800-877-6168 to reach a Japanese-speaking representative. The representative will arrange for a credit of up to $100 to be issued on the caller's third invoice after enrollment.
Customers who use the Japanese FONCARD and Sprint WORLD will gain several other calling benefits:
-- A 5 percent discount on direct-dial calls to countries not discounted under Sprint WORLD's 39-country calling list.
-- The advantages of Sprint Express. Customers traveling outside the country can use their FONCARD with Sprint Express to call to the United States through a Sprint operator. This enables them to avoid high foreign telephone surcharges and have calls billed on their regular Sprint invoice.
-- The advantages of Sprint PLUS. Customers on Sprint WORLD are automatically placed on the company's primary calling plan, Sprint PLUS. Sprint PLUS provides an automatic 20 to 30 percent discount, depending on usage, on all state-to-state calls made during evening, night and weekend rate periods. Sprint PLUS also provides a 10 percent discount on state-to-state calls made during the daytime rate period. These discounts apply when callers spend at least $20 a month.
The Japanese FONCARD is the second foreign-language card issued by Sprint. The company introduced the first Spanish-language long distance card, FONCARD Espanol, in 1990.
Sprint is a unit of United Telecommunications, Inc. (NYSE: UT), a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in revenues. Sprint, with the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network, provides a comprehensive array of global voice, data and video communications products and services.
