SPRINT HELPS 'GIVE KIDS THE WORLD' REACH TELEVISION VIEWERS; CBS-TV'S 'CIRCUS OF THE STARS' SHOW TO PROMOTE FOUNDATION'S EFFORTS

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- With Sprint (NYSE: FON) providing the telephone link and CBS-TV's "Circus of the Stars" providing the venue, the Give Kids the World Foundation will have the opportunity to reach millions of viewers this Friday, Nov. 26. Give Kids the World is a global organization that provides terminally ill children and their families with a free week's vacation in Florida at its Kids Village. By joining forces with the popular "Circus of the Stars" television show, Give Kids the World will be able to tell its story and gain a higher public profile about its worthwhile endeavors.
"Circus of the Stars" show, now in its 18th year, features television and movie stars performing in various circus acts, from taming lions and tigers to balancing stunts on a 60-foot-high wire. The show is scheduled for 8-10 p.m. (EST/PST), Friday, Nov. 26, on CBS stations.
During the show, viewers will get a chance to see and hear stories of how the organization, founded in 1986, has helped thousands of youngsters and their families to forget -- at least for a while -- the everyday trials of a terminal illness. At the end of the show, viewers will be given an 800 number to call and learn more about Give Kids the World.
Sprint is providing the number -- 800-407-9549 -- to the foundation free of charge during the outreach program.
Viewers who call in can find out about volunteer opportunities, let the organization know of a child who could visit Kids Village, or make a donation. A telephone voice response unit, specially set up for the show by Sprint's Multimedia Services Group, will record the information and Give Kids the World volunteers to follow up.
"We have been involved with Give Kids the World for just the last three years, but we already have gained a lifetime of wonderful memories," said Kevin E. Brauer, president of Sprint's Business Market Group. "Life-threatening illnesses are devastating to the families involved, and anything that can be done to ease that heavy burden is more than worthwhile.
"Sprint is involved with many organizations across the country, but Give Kids the World has a special place in our hearts. What better community involvement can there be than helping a terminally ill child smile and have some fun?"
For the last three years, Sprint has provided free long distance calling to the families staying at the Kids Village.
Earlier this year, Sprint also began sponsoring "Love Pals," which allows families that meet each other at Kids Village to call each other free of charge once they leave the village and return home.
Kids Village is a 56-villa playland in Kissimmee, Fla. In addition to providing many activities for families visiting the village, Give Kids the World arranges for free passes, meals and transportation to any of the theme parks in nearby Orlando, such as Disney World, MGM Studios and Sea World.
Give Kids the World, whose theme is "Make today count for our children," was the brainchild of Henri Landwirth, co-owner of three Holiday Inn hotels in the Orlando area. The non-profit organization relies totally on donations from corporations and sponsors to subsidize the visits made by the families.
Since its beginning in 1986, when the organization helped 329 families, more than 17,000 families have participated in the program. Give Kids the World works with more than 250 organizations worldwide that identify and arrange for transportation for the children.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with more than $10 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network.
Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, local telephone services to more than 6 million subscriber lines in 19 states, and cellular operations that service 42 metropolitan markets and more than 50 rural service areas.
