SPRINT FILES FOR OPERATING LICENSE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
WASHINGTON, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint today announced that it has filed for a license to build and operate a fiber-optic network in the United Kingdom over which it would provide a broad range of domestic and international private line and switched telecommunications services.
If approved by the British government, the initiative would be a major expansion of Sprint's operations in the United Kingdom. The company has long been a leader in packet switched data communications in the United Kingdom, which is the European hub for its telecommunications services and administrative operations.
The application for an operating license, which was filed Jan. 2 with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), is the result of Sprint's analysis of the U.K. market and discussions with British Waterways. The proposed fiber-optic transmission network will employ synchronous digital hierarchy technology throughout and will be laid under the rights-of-way of British Waterways.
The proposed network would offer very large capacity, high-speed communications circuits to large private line users, telecommunications carriers and resellers, and other emerging customer segments. In March 1991, the British government's White Paper -- "Competition and Choice: Telecommunications Policy for the 1990s" -- opened the door to new entrants in the U.K. telecommunications market and also encouraged public bodies such as British Waterways to work actively with private companies to make full use of their resources.
"We believe this proposal to provide a full range of services and to employ new technology would be good for users, for new entrants into the telecommunications market, and for established carriers," said Paolo Guidi, president of Sprint International, the international telecommunications and private networks subsidiary of Sprint. "This is an opportunity to significantly enhance the United Kingdom's telecommunications infrastructure and to enable U.K. users to better compete in the global marketplace of the 21st century."
Sprint said it would seek investors and partners to share the capital contributions for the proposed network. While its application is under review, Sprint intends to focus on completing the licensing process, concluding agreements with British Waterways and others, and advancing various other related commercial arrangements.
Sprint is a unit of United Telecommunications Inc. (NYSE: UT), a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.7 billion in revenues. Sprint, with the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network, provides a comprehensive array of global voice, data and video communications products and services.
