SPRINT EXTENDS GLOBAL FRAME RELAY NETWORK TO AUSTRALIA, HONG KONG, JAPAN AND NEW ZEALAND

SINGAPORE, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced the expansion of its global public frame relay network to include Hong Kong and Japan. In addition, Telstra (formerly AOTC) earlier announced that it will offer Sprint's global frame relay service in Australia and New Zealand.
Sprint is now accepting customer orders for service between the new locations, the United States, Canada, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Telstra announced that it will offer Sprint's global frame relay service by mid-year; service to Japan and Hong Kong will be offered at access speeds up to 256 Kbps, depending on local network facilities.
The announcement was made at Asia Telecom, currently underway in Singapore.
"Sprint is now extending the speed and advanced capabilities of its global frame relay service to key Pacific Rim commercial centers," said Paolo Guidi, president of Sprint International, Sprint's global telecommunications subsidiary. "We will continue to add those business and financial centers that have local transmission facilities capable of supporting a high performance frame relay service," he said.
Frame relay is a high speed, bandwidth-on-demand service designed to provide cost-effective connectivity for geographically dispersed networks, offering a common link for personal computer, local area network (LAN), and SNA users.
In addition, the service offers users economical, high-capacity bandwidth when needed -- such as to transfer files between personal computers in disparate locations or to support worldwide financial and medical imaging applications.
Sprint -- unlike most other frame relay service providers -- offers a committed information rate (CIR) which ensures a minimum sustained throughput at which traffic flows through the network. The service permits sustained "bursting" above a customer's requested CIR -- up to the full access channel capacity.
Sprint's CIR capability provides the most cost-effective international frame relay service, since customers are charged a flat rate for the CIR that they select, and not for excess -- bursted -- traffic.
Frame relay is among a wide range of advanced voice, video and data communications services offered in Asia by Sprint, which operates through offices and subsidiaries in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and Singapore.
Sprint is a $10.4 billion international telecommunications company, providing voice, video and data networking solutions to the world's commercial, government and financial centers. Sprint operates fiber- optic and value-added networks that are among the world's largest, and maintains offices on six continents through its more than 50 subsidiaries, joint ventures and distributor partners.
