SPRINT ANNOUNCES THE SPRINT INTEGRATED ACCESS CONTROLLER

SPRINT ANNOUNCES THE SPRINT INTEGRATED ACCESS CONTROLLER
KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced the Sprint Integrated Access Controller, a powerful new member of Sprint's Integrated Access service family. The Sprint Integrated Access Controller is a customer premises device which will allow customers to control, for the first time, real-time access management of Sprint services on a call-by-call basis.
Sprint is demonstrating a prototype of the product -- jointly developed by Sprint and Teleos Communications, Inc. -- next week at the International Communications Association (ICA) exhibition in Atlanta. The Sprint Integrated Access Controller will be available in the fourth quarter as an option to Sprint's Primary Rate Interface (PRI) service.
A key feature of the controller is the Bandwidth Manager. This feature allows customers to graphically monitor services and traffic patterns while controlling the use of access channel bandwidth between the customers' premises and Sprint's network. It also lets the customer control the bandwidth to various types of voice and data devices (e.g. PBXs, video codecs) thereby achieving better access utilization with fewer access channels.
Using the Sprint Integrated Access Controller, customers can change access allocations in minutes rather than days or weeks. Customers can set and monitor minimum reserves and maximum limits of bandwidth for each service or application.
The Sprint Integrated Access Controller also provides Inverse Multiplexing (NX64 Delay Equalization) for more efficient advanced- services transport. Inverse Multiplexing allows the customer to access Sprint's network in multiples of 64 Kbps up to 1.536 Mbps.
Sprint will showcase three applications of the Sprint Integrated Access Controller:
-- 800 ANI Delivery, which demonstrates how faster ANI delivery improves customer service.
-- Video Conferencing between ICA in Atlanta and Sprint's San Mateo, Calif., Advanced Technology Center, which demonstrates video conferencing via PRI.
-- Multi-Media Screen Sharing between Apple Macintosh computers and telephones at both ICA and San Mateo, which demonstrates simultaneous transfer of voice and data over the integrated access facility.
"The Sprint Integrated Access Controller is an example of Sprint's willingness to assume a leadership role in the telecommunications industry," said Bill Pfeiffer, senior vice president of Sprint's Data Group. "Through partnering with leading edge technology companies, Sprint demonstrates its commitment to providing advanced telecommunications solutions to our customers.
Said Jay Pisula, president and CEO of Teleos, "The capabilities of the Sprint Integrated Access Controller address an increasingly prevalent requirement for flexibility and seamless service delivery for customers making use of advanced switched digital services."
Teleos develops, manufactures and markets a complete range of customer premise-based network access products that enable full, multi-carrier network service integration.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
