SPRINT ANNOUNCES DIRECT VIDEO CONNECTIVITY TO EUROPE
 VIA SWISS PTT's MEGACOM NETWORK
WASHINGTON, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) and Swiss Telecom North America (STNA), which represents Swiss Telecom PTT, today announced a direct interconnection agreement between the Swiss PTT's MEGACOM bandwidth on demand service and Sprint's Meeting Channel, the world's largest videoconferencing network.
The agreement permits end-to-end 384 kbit/s fiber-optic connectivity between the United States and a growing number of European locations served by the Swiss MEGACOM network. Service is provided via PTAT-1, the trans-Atlantic fiber-optic cable facility jointly owned by Sprint and Cable & Wireless plc.
"This direct, all-fiber connection improves the quality of video service with faster connections between the United Sates and Switzerland," said Paolo Guidi, president of Sprint International, Sprint's global telecommunications and private networks subsidiary. "Pan-European connectivity is achieved through the PTT's MEGACOM network."
Karl Wuhrmann, deputy director-general and head of Telecommunications, Swiss Telecom PTT, noted that, "Videoconferencing is increasingly relied on to support American companies' participation in the European Economic Area, and this new service will be welcomed by the nearly 600 American-owned firms in Switzerland." He said that, "As a convenience to its customers, Swiss Telecom operates public videoconferencing rooms in several cities, provides mobile installations for special events, and can assist in the design and installation of private rooms at the customer location. Transcoding, encryption and multiple location options are also available."
Wuhrmann said that the Swiss MEGACOM network now extends to the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and to the German DASAT service. Soon it will reach Belgium, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore. The PTT can also coordinate connections to countries not offering bandwidth on demand services.
The service will be available in the second quarter, 1992.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
