SPRING SPORTS NOTEBOOK: MAKING SWIMMING FUN; CANYON COACH ADDS INTEREST AND VICTORIES.

Byline: Lee Barnathan and Rizza Yap Daily News Staff Writers

Most people wouldn't want to spend their afternoons swimming back and forth, lap after lap, losing track of how much time and how many laps are completed.

It's true you can spell swimming without f-u-n, but Dave Plasterer wants to change that.

Plasterer, the new Canyon swim coach, is trying to make the grind 1. GRIND - GRaphical INterpretive Display.

 a little more enjoyable.

``It's my first season here, so I can't compare it to last year,'' he said, ``but when I talk to the kids, they say they have a tighter group. We're swimming fast and having fun.''

The fun comes in winning meets, as the girls are 4-0 and the boys are 2-2 in spite of in opposition to all efforts of; in defiance or contempt of; notwithstanding.

having just 14 swimmers. But the fun also begins in workouts.

Plasterer runs different drills in each practice and often adds incentive. He chooses someone to do a task - like swimming two laps without breathing - and if the person is able to accomplish it, the team gets a reward.

``I'll say, `If this person can do this, everyone can get out 10 minutes early.' ''

Add Canyon swim: Plasterer replaced Mike Newman, who has coached at Canyon for 25 years and has seen a lot of changes. The one that bothers him most is the waning interest in swimming for the boys' team.

Reasons include needing jobs to not wanting to wear the tight suits to wanting to play one of the other four boys' spring sports.

While Newman doesn't like the change, he understands it. His children play other sports.

``Swimming is a lot like cross country: long, repetitive workouts,'' Newman said. ``It's not like football, where you can get a lot of people out to watch. I swam swam

Some twosome: The Hart High boys' tennis team has experienced a rocky start in league play, falling to Burbank 16-2 and losing a tie-breaker to Valencia just before spring break.

But there is a bright spot, said coach Chris Mansfield. It's his No. 1 doubles team of juniors Andrew Davidson and Todd Castagna, who have lost just two sets this season. A victory over Josh Glass and James Chun, the top returning duo from 1997 Southern Section finalist Campbell Hall Campbell Hall can refer to:

, is perhaps their finest accomplishment.

``Todd is very consistent, and Andrew has a lot of power,'' Mansfield said. ``It's good chemistry.''

Next Tuesday, Hart will face the Mark Keppel Dr. Mark Keppel served as County Superintendent of Schools of Los Angeles County from 1902 to 1928. Life and Times

Close wins: The tide is beginning to turn for the Canyon High boys' tennis team. Last year, the Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

lost several close calls - three 10-8 matches and three 9-9 decisions in all. This season, however, Canyon already has registered one 9-9 and one 10-8 victory.

Before spring break, the Cowboys won 12-6 against Burroughs and defeated Saugus 10-8 to remain undefeated in league. Next Saturday, they will compete in Valencia High's Spring Smash tournament, bumped up from last Saturday because of rain.

Leading the way for Canyon (8-4, 2-0) is No. 1 singles player Sean Berent and the No. 1 doubles team of senior lettermen Brian White Brian White may refer to:
