SPRING SPORTS: REBELS' STREAK IN PERIL? : Q.H. TENNIS TEAM SEEMS VULNERABLE.Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer Quartz Hill High has not lost a Golden League boys tennis match in more than eight seasons. The streak is so long that coach Bill Leneway said he has lost track of the exact number of matches, partly because the configuration of the league has changed through the years. However, while the wins keep coming - the Rebels are 5-0 in league, 9-5 overall - the matches are getting closer. The difference this year? Lack of experience. Jeff Dowling, a first-year player and not a key figure, is the only senior on the team. That's why second-place Palmdale (4-1 league) has designs on an upset when the two meet at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Palmdale. The Falcons lost to the Rebels 12-6 on March 30. Junior Steven Roth and sophomore Kevin Lu, the top doubles team, have three league losses. But Leneway said the tandem ``is starting to jell and playing better all the time.'' Quartz Hill lost in the first round of the Division I playoffs last year to Apple Valley, a team the Rebels beat in the regular season. ``After beating them earlier and then losing in the playoffs, that was pretty irritating,'' Leneway said. Quartz Hill won the Southern Section Division II championship in 1992. To get back there, Leneway knows his team must be able to compete with the best from the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills. and Ventura County. ``I guess the players at Quartz Hill have been better than the players at the other Golden League schools (over the years),'' Leneway said. ``Also, the kids have been willing to work hard, so it's a combination of talent and their work ethic work ethic n. Senior Karly Lounder, who did not compete last season because of personal reasons, is back in form after qualifying for the CIF prelims her freshman and sophomore years. Lounder is undefeated in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Teammate Sarah Mannino, also a senior, is another key swimmer. She specializes in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM. Sophomore Kevin Ratcliff leads the boys. His best event is the 100 backstroke. Freshman Chris Dauser is also having a good season competing in the 100 breaststroke and 500 freestyle.
