SPRING IN THEIR STEP RED-CARPET CELEBS LOOK LIKE THEY'RE 'FUSSING AGAIN'.

Byline: Sandra Barrera Staff Writer

BEVERLY HILLS - The most clamor on the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday afternoon wasn't for a specific nominee, but rather for presenter Jennifer Lopez, who showed up alone after a public breakup last week from fiance Ben Affleck.

Lopez struck a note of spring in a tangerine tangerine: see orange.

Chiffon and pastels were everywhere in long and short gowns. Elisha Cuthbert of Fox's ``24'' arrived in a ``'50s prom dress'' of peach organza or·gan·za

Showing a reporter the tag inside her strappy tomato-colored heels, she said, ``See? They're Jimmy Choos.'' Her rose earrings were the same color.

The look she was going for?

``Vintage-y,'' she said. ``Yeah, like my jewelry. I think jewelry can do a lot for an outfit, you know, make it a lot more than it is.''

While there was plenty of jewelry to be seen on the red carpet, from diamonds to gemstones to jade, Cuthbert didn't wear a necklace. Neither did the graceful Amber Tamblyn of ``Joan of Arcadia Joan of Arcadia is an American television fantasy/family drama, which aired on Fridays, 8-9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS from September 262003 until April 222005. She arrived on the arm of her father, actor Russ Tamblyn (``West Side Story'').

Also without jewels was Nicole Kidman. ``No earrings,'' she told E! fashion correspondent Joan Rivers. Maybe that was because the sparkle came from her gown, a low-cut short gold sequin se·quin

Also in a shorter gown was the always fashionable Sarah Jessica Parker, who stopped to show off her dress to ``Queer Eye for the Straight Guy's'' Carson Kressley, who wore a pink tux jacket. Parker was in a strapless strap·less

, designer Isaac Mizrahi noted he was seeing lots of long gowns on this night. And he liked it.

``It makes you feel like they're fussing again, which is great,'' he says. ``I like when people look like they tried, don't you? Because it really is polite to try.''

Mizrahi especially liked the creamy satin Bill Blass gown worn by Hope Davis from ``American Splendor.''

``She's so cute in that dress,'' he said.

Davis said she chose the dress for its clean-cut lines.

``It reminds me of a Jackie O kind of 1960s look,'' she said, ``because it's simple and yet modern.''

Classic black, another favorite, was worn by a very pregnant Debra Messing as well as Alicia Silverstone and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

As ``Angels in America'' star Justin Kirk, who wore Hugo Boss, said: ``You got to dress up when you come to these things.''

Not everybody went for the glamour. Sharon Stone and Dominic Monaghan, who played Merry in ``The Lord of the Rings'' trilogy, seemed dressed for the Grammys.

``It's all rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll: see rock music. , man,'' said Monaghan, wearing a black Richard Tyler printed suit made out of ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

But the knockout of the night was double nominee Scarlett Johansson in a champagne corset corset, article of dress designed to support or modify the figure.
