SPORTS ROUNDUP: PEPPERDINE SWEEPS PORTLAND FOR 30TH WIN.Byline: Daily News Freshman outfielder Donald Brown hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run first inning, and visiting Pepperdine completed a three-game sweep of Portland with a 9-5 victory Sunday that assured the Waves of a 30-win season for the 28th year in a row. Pepperdine (30-17, 16-7) moved within a game of San Francisco (34-14, 17-6) in the West Coast Conference's West Division. USF's game at Santa Clara was rained out. Portland (14-32, 5-19) cut its deficit to 5-4 with a three-run third, but the Waves scored two in the fourth as Adrian Ortiz doubled and scored on an error. --Loyola Marymount 16, St. Mary's 14: Chris Pettit's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Lions (22-24, 12-11) to a sweep of the visiting Gaels (18-27, 11-16) in a WCC game that lasted four hours, 44 minutes. Pettit went 3 for 4 with three runs and four RBI. --Oregon State 16, UCLA 3: The fourth-ranked Beavers (36-8, 14-4) scored in every inning except the third and sixth, opening a one-game lead on Arizona (32-15, 12-3) in the Pacific-10 Conference by sweeping the Bruins (11-33, 1-14) at Jackie Robinson Stadium. COLLEGE SOFTBALL --Cal State Northridge 9, UC Riverside 3: Kia Fennell tossed a three-hitter, and Heather Martin and Jan Moshier - CSUN's first two batters - combined for three hits, seven RBI and five runs as the Matadors (16-20, 5-13) romped in a Big West Conference clash. --Community College regionals: Host Cypress College scored eight runs in the third inning en route to a five-inning, 15-1 rout over College of the Canyons in a regional final, advancing to the May 13-15 state championships for the 16th time in 17 years. Canyons (29-13), which lost to Cypress (31-12) 2-0 Saturday, advanced to the final with a 3-2 win over Saddleback (24-12), which eliminated Valley (27-13-1) 4-0 in nine innings. At Norwalk, Antelope Valley (27-11-1) was ousted 7-6 by host Cerritos (29-10). Fullerton (28-15) won the regional. |
