Time for a reality check

It saddens me to see the 2006 Ducks showed up not ready to play at Washington State after Cal sunk them because they showed up there not ready to play. After these two bad losses to a good team and a mediocre me·di·o·cre

team, I don't believe that this version of Oregon football team will contend for anything other than a lower-tier bowl game. Come to think of it, other than Joey Harrington's senior year, that is all we have ever attained under coach Bellotti.

Maybe as loyal Duck fans, we should set our collective sights a tad lower. Eugene is a wonderful community and the U of O a storied institution of higher learning higher learning

, but let's face facts. The Ohio States, USCs, Michigans, Floridas, Auburns, etc., not only have a solid history of big wins on their resumes, but huge alumni support.

We have what we have: A great community passionate about a pretty good football team that usually finishes in the top 20. With luck, our Ducks will end up 9-3 or, worst case, 8-4, and go to the Sun Bowl. Even though there seems to be about 100 postseason bowl games now, there really aren't.

And when you get right to it, third place (I hope) in one of the two or three toughest Division I conferences in the nation ain't all that bad. In fact, it's pretty darn good.

Look on the sunny side

I've admired your editorials and columns on Duck football this season. Today's sports stories do nothing to keep the team buoyant Buoyant

in this unpredictable season. Everyone needs the power of your words when the media wants to remind us of mistakes - in detail and in constant replay. The team certainly knows how many fumbles, turnovers and interceptions were made. They have watched themselves on film and in their dreams.

Why not focus on what works instead of instant replays of disappointment?

Write about the successes of our Oregon Fighting Ducks! Let's have the next two days filled with the wonder of the team - not mere wondering of what went wrong.

How about interviews with the unsung heroes of the team that we never hear about? Many players on special teams never get noticed in print. Bring them to your pages.

How about those who practice and support the team but never play? Show us the trainers and hard workers behind the scenes.

I'm certain a little interviewing with these valuable individuals would bring more autumn sunshine to your pages.

Show a little respect

I couldn't let Ron Bellamy's article about the UO-WSU football game go unchallenged. Under Brooks and Bellotti, the UO football program and press shows no respect for their opponents and also likes to whine about the lack of respect given the Ducks. Guess what? They go hand in hand.

The four Northwest Pac-10 teams have the normal passion about beating each other for bragging rights. Other than Oregon, they generally respect one another's programs, giving credit where credit is due. Oregon refuses to accept that someone actually beat them and instead denigrates others, e.g., `they didn't really beat us, we just gave it away,' assuming if the Ducks `played their game,' no one could match their superiority.

To totally blow off WSU's performance as a fluke fluke, parasitic flatworm of the trematoda class, related to the tapeworm. Instead of the cilia, external sense organs, and epidermis of the free-living flatworms, adult flukes have sucking disks with which they cling to their hosts and an external cuticle that  is neither factual nor respectful, given recent history and the current season. Oregon's and WSU's 2006 records are almost identical. WSU's only losses are to Auburn and USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , and to Cal. The Cougars played Cal far tougher than Oregon did. Oregon's record is padded with the Oklahoma joke.

carved up Oregon. Yes, Oregon made bonehead plays, but WSU had a lot to do with their troubles.

In short, Oregon got beaten by a better team - that day or whole season, only time will tell.
