Morals watch hit and miss

Very enlightening article by Ron Bellamy "Rockin'" Ron Bellamy (born December 13, 1964) is an American professional boxer. He is the half-brother of former NBA center Walt Bellamy. Ron also started his career in basketball, playing collegiately at UNC-Charlotte and professionally in New Zealand and Europe.  on the booze issue at Autzen Stadium The stadium is tucked between the Willamette River and Coburg Hills. The uniquely shaped bowl blends in with the wooded Eugene landscape. The shape also allows for unique acoustics, making it one of the loudest stadiums in NCAA Football for its capacity. . I agree that drinking problems exist at the stadium. If they stopped the sales at the Mo Center once the game has begun and then eliminate the passes given at halftime, perhaps a balance to the problem could be reached.

However, for Bellamy to be the one to write about the morals of drinking is the larger issue. It wasn't long ago he was praising the lifestyle of a certain Duck basketball player who recently fathered a born-out-of-wedlock child. What is right, and which is wrong?

It might be suggested that Bellamy stick to the sports scene and leave the preaching of morals to those at the pulpit.

Tailgating Tailgating

 out of hand

I've had season tickets and have been attending Duck football since the early 1960s. Throughout the years, as tailgating pregame parties have grown more lavish and few attempts are made to check fans for possession of alcohol, this problem has become worse.

We are now known as the most unruly and rude of all fans in the Pac-10. We need to take firm steps to stop this pattern of rude behavior.

Mr. Bellamy's suggestions, (1) eliminate sales of beer in the Moshofsky Center completely, or terminate sales after the kickoff, (2) ban backpacks and similar carry-in items, and (3) cease giving fans passes out of the stadium, would do much to curb this situation. Then Oregon would no longer be ducking the issue.

Oregon up to challenge

Return the favor to OU

As Duck football fans traveling to Oklahoma for the game in 2004, please remember what it was like to be not just welcomed, but amazed at how enthusiastically hosted, supported and thanked we were for our presence. We all came home as better people, and wrote letters, spoke to others, etc., about the same, even with the Ducks having lost.

It is easy over a two-year period to forget some things, but please let us, as Duck fans, not forget and maybe even hope to emulate that hospitality, kindness and spirit that the Oklahoma fans deserve. They are an incredible bunch, and I thank them all, again, for our stay in '04.

Show some hospitality

Two years ago I made a commitment to myself that I would send a message to fellow Ducks fans. When the Oklahoma Sooners The University of Oklahoma features 17 varsity sports teams. They participate in the NCAA's Division I-A, in the South Division of the Big 12 Conference.  visit Autzen Stadium, please treat their fans with the same level of respect and hospitality that I received when I traveled back to Norman.

In 2004, when the Green and Yellow faithful descended upon their town, my buddies and I were treated very well, better than any other city I've traveled to follow the Ducks. The Sooner fans loved their football and gave me the impression they follow their team on the road and valued others who did the same. The common question that intrigued me throughout that weekend in Norman was, `Did ya'll drive down here?' I would often remind them of the distance to Oregon and in some cases they knew, and that did not faze them in their thoughts.

So, when you encounter the Red and White of Oklahoma fans in Eugene this weekend, please welcome them to Oregon and treat their fans with the great respect we were treated. Don't forget to ask them ... Did ya'll drive here?

Show some class

Two years ago, I traveled to Oklahoma for the football game and experienced a revelation. From the moment I landed at the airport, my mother and I were treated, not just by the fans but by the whole community, with respect. Before, during and after the game, the people of Oklahoma showed me the meaning of sportsmanship for fans.

On Sept. 2, when Don Essig welcomed the Stanford fans, people at Autzen Stadium booed them. I think it is disrespectful dis·re·spect·ful

I hope that those who think it's a good idea to act this way can learn what I learned at Oklahoma. Show some class, Duck fans. Let the Oklahoma fans want to come back. I certainly would go back to Norman. Don't boo the Sooners. Show Autzen pride and class for once.

Case for second opinions

In March of this year, I was misdiagnosed and was told I had a rare and very dangerous form of uterine cancer uterine cancer

Speaking as a retired nurse, these three examples are proof positive that second opinions are not only an option, but a necessity.

`Go Ducks' nostalgia

I grew up in west Eugene, attended the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. Your article (`Sooners' date at Autzen is more evidence Ducks have arrived,' Register-Guard, Sept. 13) reminded me of an important fact never to be taken for granted Adj. 1. taken for granted - evident without proof or argument; "an axiomatic truth"; "we hold these truths to be self-evident"

to watch the Ducks' season opener against Stanford at the OldPro. It's the equivalent of a Rennie's or Taylor's, minus the charm, charisma or style. As Oregon began to pull away, televisions around the bar began to switch over to the Cal game, and by the end there was only one television broadcasting Stanford's demise. As I was sitting there with a beer, (no microbrews on tap - blasphemy blasphemy, in religion, words or actions that display irreverence toward or contempt for God or that which is held sacred. Blasphemy is regarded as an offense against the community to varying degrees, depending on the extent of the identification of a religion with ) it became clear how lucky I was to be a part of the Oregon football tradition.

For five months out of each year, it is completely acceptable and expected to replace `hello,' `goodbye' or `thank you' with a friendly `Go Ducks.' So for the next five months, when I am sitting at a bar in California and the bartender slides a questionable-looking domestic brew across the oak to me, I'll just look at him, smile and say - `Go Ducks.'
