The pride of UO

I admit that I haven't been a huge fan of basketball, but I want the Ducks to know they've turned me into one. I've always followed how they did, but was glued to my TV for the game against the Gators. I cried tears for them for their defeat. I hope they know how proud of them everybody is and the tenacious te·na·cious

A welcome irritation

What were those green and yellow-uniformed basketball players doing? They should never have been in the NCAA Tournament NCAA Tournament can mean:

Men's Sports
  • NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, the most common usage of this term
  • NCAA Men's Division II Basketball Championship
  • NCAA Men's Division III Basketball Championship
anyway. And what an irritation they were to all the experts!

It was obvious that Oregon would be in the Big Dance. Respectable record, winning the Pac-10 tournament and given a No. 3 seed. You would think the seeding was some measure of respect. But someone forgot to tell the announcers and experts.

Watching the tournament and commentary, it quickly became obvious to me that Oregon was the team that was not supposed to be anywhere after the first game. The Ducks became the team nobody wanted. Wiping out Cinderella teams Miami (Ohio), tournament darlings; then Winthrop; then UNLV UNLV University of Nevada, Las Vegas , the father/son show. You could see the disappointment on commentators' faces and hear it in their voices as they explained why Oregon won each time. Just tore at their heart strings. And it was that Oregon team again. Who told Porter to score so much anyway?

Well, all can breathe a final sigh of relief. Defending champion defending champion n (SPORT) → defensor/a m/f del título

defending champion n (Sport) → champion(ne) en titre

Florida finally, barely defeated the Ducks. The Final Four can avoid the embarrassment of having the team that nobody wanted in there.

The Ducks did themselves proud. And notice is served; don't overlook them. They lose only three seniors. I expect them to not only be back in the tournament but hopefully irritating those experts even more next year.

A time for thanks

What an exciting year for the Oregon men's basketball team. Thanks to the team, and Ernie Kent Ernie Kent (Born January 22, 1955 in Rockford, Illinois) is the current head men's basketball coach at the University of Oregon. He has been the Ducks' coach since he replaced Jerry Green after Green left for University of Tennessee after the 1996-97 season.  and his staff. We appreciate your time and commitment and look forward to another great season. Hopefully we will have all of the staff and all of the eligible players back with us. You are fun and exciting to watch.

We will miss Aaron, Adam, and Adrian and wish them well in their endeavors. Thank you for all you have done for the university and the community.

We also wish to thank The Register-Guard for its great coverage of the games and the team.

Kent deserves more

OK, so the Ducks didn't get to the Final Four by beating the defending champions, Florida, but they surely gave them a good scare. And earlier this year they beat two of the teams that were in that foursome. And they creamed the opposition in the Pac-10 tournament.

I would hope that this is sufficient success to quiet the insane calls to replace Ernie Kent. What he really deserves is a big bonus, a five-year extension on his contract and a grateful community saying thank you for an exciting season and a job well done!

Good season, good luck

Wow! Now that's the way to finish out a season. I felt so much pride watching the men's basketball team play in March Madness March Madness may refer to:
  • NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship
  • NCAA March Madness series, an EA Sports basketball video game series
  • Mega March Madness, pay-per-view package
, and more important, they showed their Duck pride. Kudos to coach Kent and his staff who never lost faith in these players. Some of us wondered when it would all come together, and boy did it ever!

Thank you, Aaron, for staying for your senior season. You gave us fans memories we will never forget (the game-winning shot against UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
is one of mine). I hope after a few days the whole team and staff will look back over the past year and realize what a great ride it was!

Best of luck to the seniors in the next chapter of their lives, and we will see the rest of you in The Pit next fall!

Ducks didn't get calls

Going into Sunday's Elite Eight game between Oregon and Florida, I was prepared to see them win, and equally prepared to see them lose. I can take a loss as well as any, as long as the game was played hard, and called right. I have never been one to try and blame a game (win or loss) on a referee and their calls. But then again, I have never seen any basketball game where four players from one team fouled out.

Now, I'm aware there were fouls, the Ducks shot poorly and all that, but for Hairston to get fouled out taking an elbow to the neck while going for a loose ball and Leunen fouling out making an incredible defensive swipe on the ball and stealing it - at that juncture in the game, and that caliber of a game - is inexcusable.

The referees allowed Florida to play their style of basketball the entire game, and limited the Ducks to playing extremely tentative basketball the entire game - even in the final minutes when down by a few, making great plays, yet for nothing because of a bad whistle.

I guess until Oregon is a powerhouse school, the respect shall probably lack, even in the Elite Eight.

Team attitude lifts UO

What made this season of basketball even more special for me was hearing about the changes the coaches and players made before the season began and how they continued their new approach after the season started. It was your hard work ethic work ethic

Aaron, we were blessed as fans to see you grow and mature forward to next season. I wish our outgoing seniors the best of luck. This special team will never be forgotten.

R-G has double standard

Twice now, sports reporter Rob Moseley has referred to Gabe Richards and Kristen Forristall as "defectors." I'm curious as to why he chose to use such a loaded, prejudicial prej·u·di·cial
adj.
1. Detrimental; injurious.

2. Causing or tending to preconceived judgment or convictions:
word to describe the two former Duck basketball players.

Six years ago, when players on the Oregon women's team went to an associate athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  to discuss problems they had with then head coach Jody Runge, The Register-Guard treated the players to anonymity and coverage worthy of resistance fighters. Hailing them for their bravery in confronting the dictatorial tactics of Runge. In the days following the original story, Ron Bellamy "Rockin'" Ron Bellamy (born December 13, 1964) is an American professional boxer. He is the half-brother of former NBA center Walt Bellamy. Ron also started his career in basketball, playing collegiately at UNC-Charlotte and professionally in New Zealand and Europe.  and the sports department at the R-G delved deep into Runge's supposed Ahab-like coaching.

Flash forward now, to 2006, and two players with similar disagreements are branded "defectors." Better then "traitors," I suppose, but still well outside the general rule for collegiate athletes.

As Moseley's story of March 27 pointed out, this year's team far exceeded expectations, and Bev Smith's career record of 17 wins over .500 is not terrible. Since similar player/coach dynamics led to an R-G witch hunt against her more successful predecessor, I wonder about the change in tactics for the sports staff at the R-G.

What's the difference between the two? Well, Runge was notoriously difficult with the press. She also pushed stridently for equality for her team and her coaches, and herself. Smith is much less troublesome, to both the university and the press.

Could The Register-Guard have pushed for her firing as retaliation RETALIATION. The act by which a nation or individual treats another in the same manner that the latter has treated them.
