SPORTS MAIL.Byline: The Register-Guard Who failed whom? I read Paul Walton's letter (Register-Guard, Oct. 6) regarding Micah Harris Micah Harris , instructor at Pitt CC, is a great lover of Maine Coons and has published a story about the lives of his cats. (September 28, 1982 - June 11, 2004) was a senior defensive lineman on the Duke University football team. with much consternation. I think Mr. Walton's emotions got the better of him as he defended his `dear friend.' Micah Harris was convicted of torture, mayhem, physical assault and sexual assault in a court of law. These are serious charges. The report of the incident I read states Mr. Harris repeatedly punched a woman in the face because she refused his sexual advances. Mr. Harris doesn't sound like such a wonderful person to me. Also, Mr. Walton states, `...we failed him (Harris).' How did we fail him? Harris received a free college education via athletic scholarship An athletic scholarship is a form of scholarship to attend a college or university awarded to an individual based predominantly on their ability to play in a sport. They are common in the United States, but in many countries they are rare or non-existent. that led to opportunities most of us never get. In addition, Harris was given the means to earn a great living through his track and field talents that were developed while he attended Oregon. Did we make him go into a bar and commit torture, mayhem and sexual assault? Had the justice system not prosecuted Mr. Harris, we would have failed the victim of his criminal behavior as well as society. Mr. Walton seems to justify Harris' actions because `there are more details to the story.' No person deserves to be beaten and assaulted regardless of `other details.' No, I don't believe we failed Micah Harris. I believe he failed us. PAMELA CERDA Florence Put a lid on it According to according to prep. 1. I think it is high time to go back to the thought of building a dome over Autzen Stadium The stadium is tucked between the Willamette River and Coburg Hills. The uniquely shaped bowl blends in with the wooded Eugene landscape. The shape also allows for unique acoustics, making it one of the loudest stadiums in NCAA Football for its capacity. . I came from upstate New York Upstate New York is the region of New York State north of the core of the New York metropolitan area. Syracuse is noted for its research programs in government and industry; facilities include the Center for Science and Technology, the Newhouse Communications Center, and built the Carrier Dome, which has been a great recruiting tool for their athletics program and has brought in a steadily increasing revenue for the city. I have no idea why this was not brought up. Eugene will only benefit and prosper from this, and it will bring in a lot of revenue for years to come that can be used to help in areas that are financially lacking. Football, basketball and other programs can share Autzen, and the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. Top recruits of all sports will see that and want to come to be a part of that, turning the athletics program into a powerhouse. If you build it, they will come. JONATHAN HOPKINS Marysville, Calif. How about hardware? I have a suggestion that I think would add a little more pageantry to the annual Civil War game. How about a trophy presentation after the game? I think that a fitting award would be "The Duckbilled Platypus platypus (plăt`əpəs), semiaquatic egg-laying mammal, Ornithorhynchus anatinus, of Tasmania and E Australia. Also called duckbill, or duckbilled platypus, it belongs to the order Monotremata (see monotreme), the most primitive group Trophy," maybe with a green "Duck" bill and an orange "Beaver" tail. Whimsical, as well as fitting, this trophy could be placed in the custody of the winning team for the year in the tradition of other prestigious schools across the country. DANIEL O'NEILL Eugene |
