Though children can play basketball for free in the new gym, which opened Dec. 7, they still contributed to the city's food drive, even bringing a couple extra items to make up for past visits, said Shirley Greenwell, a city recreation leader who works at the facility.

And adult visitors have chosen to save the price of admission to play at the gym by bringing everything from nuts to pasta sauce as part of the city's food drive.

``If they forget, they bring more the next time,'' Greenwell said.

``We just got flooded,'' said Tymeri Cuervo, city recreation coordinator. ``We told people you can play (free) if you bring canned food canned food

The gym, at 26407 Golden Valley Road, has been filled with children over the past few days because of winter break. The complex has two basketball courts, but additional lower hoops are set up so that younger children can play.
