, space where dogs can run free of leashes and a series of trails are in the plans for expansion of Santa Clarita's Sports Complex, a proposal the City Council will consider Tuesday.

More than 800 residents and the local sports organizations helped design the 38 acres added to the Sports Complex, and the city Parks and Recreation Department has recommended approval of a blueprint based on those suggestions.

The $25 million to $30 million project endorsed by the city Parks Commission is still subject to environmental studies and design work before grading can begin.

The council will meet at 6 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers, 23920 Valencia Blvd.

The master plan drafted by consultants and city staff members includes three multi-use sports fields with terraced seating much in demand by local youth soccer and football programs. Two sites are being looked at for a dog park - one where leash rules would not be applied.

In response to a request from residents, a tot lot close to one of the sports fields also is mapped.

Work began on the Sports Complex in 1998, shortly after the city bought an abandoned cosmetics warehouse - three large buildings on about 30 acres - for $3.08 million. The first project was an outdoor skate park and one of the warehouses was remodeled as a gymnasium with two basketball-volleyball courts and four racketball courts.
