SPORTS BRIEFS LOCAL BOXERS EARN HONORS IN FIGHTS.


Three Santa Clarita Community Center boxers participated in the Regional Silver Gloves tournament held Nov. 5 and 6 in Long Beach. Jonathan Ortiz, 13, and Jose Coranado, 11, both defeated their opponents to become regional silver glove champions. Alfredo Coranado, 13, was a semi-finalist.

Santa Clarita boxer Juan Ruiz Jr. defeated Jorge Garcia of Guadalajara, Mexico Nov. 10 at the Spa Casino and Hotel in Palm Springs. Ruiz has a record of 8-0 with three knock-outs and is scheduled to fight again Dec. 28 in Las Vegas. He started his boxing career at the Community Center.

Michael Ortiz, Hector Guizar, Jonathan Ortiz and Alfredo Coranado competed in the National Police Athletic Tournament Nov. 18 in Kansas City, Mo. Michael Ortiz won his bout and advanced to the finals where he won the silver medal. Jonathan Ortiz and Alfredo Coranado also received silver medals. Hector Guizar was defeated, but made it a close fight.

Tournament seT at Spectrum Club

VALENCIA - A boys basketball tournament will be held, Dec. 8-9 at the Spectrum Club, 24525 Town Center Drive, Valencia. Two divisions, ages 11-12 and ages 13-14, will compete. Registration is $200 per team. Call Alan Van Hook at (661) 255-2212, Ext. 215.

Basketball camp offered by city

CANYON COUNTRY - The city of Santa Clarita will offer a Winter Basketball Camp, 9 a.m.-noon Dec. 26-28 at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex, 26407 Golden Valley Road, Canyon Country. The three-day camp will emphasize individual ball handling skills, shooting techniques and the proper attitude needed to play the game. The cost is $50 per camper.
