SPORTS BRIEFLY.Byline: The Register-Guard THE REGION Newren sets course record at Open qualifier VANCOUVER, Wash. - Rachel Newren set a women's course record while winning the U.S. Open Women's qualifier at Royal Oaks Country Club on Monday. The Salt Lake City native and recent BYU grad shot a 2-under 70 to win the event by two strokes over Sarah Tiller of Boise. Among the 12 qualifiers who advanced to sectional play was former University of Oregon golfer Johnna Nealy of Grants Pass, who finished seventh with a 6-over 78. Oregon State junior Jessi Gebhardt was one of two alternates after she tied with five others for 11th at 80 but did not make the final two spots in a playoff. Two of her OSU teammates, Jillian Ferrante and Lauren Archer, also tied for 11th. Beavers ranked No. 16 in latest baseball poll CORVALLIS - Oregon State is ranked 16th in this week's USA Today/ESPN baseball coaches poll after the Beavers dropped two of three games to Washington State over the weekend. OSU (36-13, 8-10 Pac-10) also is ranked No. 22 by Baseball America magazine, No. 19 by Collegiate Baseball newspaper and No. 18 by the National College Baseball Writers Association. The Beavers host seventh-ranked Arizona State for three games starting Friday to finish their home regular-season schedule. OSU heads to Top of the World for hoops tourney Oregon State will play Colorado State in the opening game of the eight-team 2007 BP Top of the World Classic men's basketball tournament on Nov. 15 hosted by the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
