Basically, all I have time to do is jump in the car after a race,'' Hess said. Her weekly schedule balancing the two sports is equally demanding. In addition to cross country practices, Hess also works out with the soccer team on Tuesdays and Thursdays. ``It's tough,'' Hess said. ``It's kind of crazy. I am up pretty late doing homework. I can't say I enjoy doing both. I guess I feel committed to soccer and cross country.'' Hess, 14, has demonstrated promise in both. A midfielder and a goalie, she was the youngest player selected from tryouts in April for Ricochet, an age 19-and-under team. Hess, who has been playing soccer for eight years, has emerged as the Lancers' No. 1 runner and a contender for the Marmonte League title in today's finals at College Park in Oxnard. With teammate Amanda Armstrong, the defending league champion who is slowed by an ankle injury, Hess has helped pick up the slack for Thousand Oaks (7-0), which is seeking its fifth Marmonte League title in six years. Hess and Armstrong placed third and fourth in the Ventura County championships in Ojai last Friday to help Thousand Oaks to the team title. The Lancers lanc·er n. 1. The arrangement between Farrell and Hess regarding soccer has also run smoothly this fall. Farrell said he has had situations in the past in which runners skipped cross country practices and competitions for club soccer, but that has not occurred with Hess. Hess, who plans to go out for the Thousand Oaks soccer team, has not missed a meet this season because of soccer and Farrell has reciprocated by lightening her workouts on soccer practice days. ``We've had some unfortunate circumstances with soccer, but she has been very cooperative,'' Farrell said. Cross country takes precedence today, but soccer is still foremost for Hess. Track is still a question mark. ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed) "Don't know the trade."
