SPORT CHALET TO OPEN PALMDALE STORE.

PALMDALE - Sport Chalet Sport Chalet is a retailer of sporting equipment, apparel, shoes, and accessories in the United States.

It operates approximately 40 company owned stores in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, with new stores opening soon in Utah, with the first at Jordan Landing.

 giant, will open a store in the Palmdale Marketplace, officials announced Wednesday.

Sport Chalet will build a 38,000-square-foot store at the south end of the shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into , located on 10th Street West south of Avenue P.

A Linens 'N' Things store opened in April and a Barnes and Noble bookstore opened earlier this month. A 30,000-square-foot Ross Dress for Less is expected to open in late fall and a 24,000-square-foot Staples store will be added in late fall or early 2001.

``We are on a roll right now and we are going to ride it as long as we can,'' Roberts said.

Interest in Palmdale - particularly the west side - picked up after Dillard's decided to open its first Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. The upscale Dillard's is a respected player in the retail industry, and other chains took a look at Palmdale when they heard Dillard's was moving there, officials said.

Calls to Sport Chalet were not returned.

The shopping center's developer, Gary Safady, and the broker representing the center were also at the retail industry conference in Las Vegas and did not return phone calls.

The shopping center already has a Target department store, a Lowe's home improvement store, and a Best Buy electronics store.

Safady plans to add more shops and restaurants on freestanding pads located along 10th Street West and two other pads along Technology Drive.
