SPLASH DOWN: Q&A WITH VILLAGE CHRISTIAN'S MEGAN WIECHMANN.

Village Christian of Sun Valley junior Megan Wiechmann is one of the area's top setters, leading the Crusaders girls' volleyball team to a season-opening sweep of Hart of Newhall, followed by an undefeated run to the title Saturday at the Laguna Blanca This article is about the body of water. Daily News: You have a new coach, Robert Blanken, and you're off to your best start in your three years in the program. What do you attribute the early success to?

Megan Wiechmann: We have a lot better team -- both in terms of talent and chemistry. I think this group has bonded a lot more. We learned a lot of things from (former coach Nancy Tinkham) and we've learned a lot from Bobby. We've come to realize there's a lot of different views on how to play the game.

DN: How was the transition when Nancy, your coach last year, left the program to spend more time with her young children, and Bobby took over as coach before summer practice began?

MW: We were kind of shocked, but we knew it was the best thing for Nancy. But it's opened up new opportunities with us having a new coach. It was a really big benefit (having Bobby around all summer). We learned a whole new defense and we were able to ask a lot of questions. It helped a lot.

DN: When you weren't playing with your Village Christian teammates during the summer, you helped San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. How big of an accomplishment was that for you?

MW: It made me a lot more confident. But it didn't change much in terms of me playing. It makes me feel a lot better and makes me realize all this work isn't for nothing. It shows that I'm definitely building toward something.

setter Megan Hosp, one of the best ever to play in this area. How has that improved your setting?

MW: Since it's only focused on me, (the instruction) is more about playing the game as a setter and reading defenses and where I can put the ball against blockers. You can ask her about anything and she'll almost always know the answer. I would definitely not be where I am now without (Megan and club coach Kenji Mukai).

DN: Do you think this team can win the Olympic League or qualify for the playoffs?

MW: It might be too early to tell. We're all happy (with the results) and we're all working really hard to get far, but we can't look too far ahead.

KATIE DUNN

Saugus, cross country, sr.

Dunn elevated her performance significantly this offseason. The Saugus senior cross country runner and her teammates spent most of their summer days running through hills in Big Bear once during the day and again at night.

Those workouts translated into an explosive season opener for Dunn. Her performance at the Seaside Invitational, the team's first race of the regular season, was of championship caliber.

Dunn blazed through the San Buenaventura

"To run 21 seconds faster than Shannon is amazing," Paragas said. "I couldn't have been more pleased."

"(Paragas) was telling me and the rest of the team that we had to work hard if we wanted to come in here and do good." Dunn said. "I was telling myself I needed to continue working hard if I wanted to run 17 (seconds). And look what happened."

"I'm kind of worried if I am going to keep up the hard work and not burn out too early," Dunn said. "But all the hard work will surely pay off. Running in the altitude and then coming down here really helped."

Evashwick gained notoriety around Harvard-Westlake of Studio City last week for having one of the most unusual injuries to sideline an athlete. He ate a cupcake so quickly, he said, that he didn't see the plastic decoration on top and ate that, too, requiring minor surgery to remove the plastic pick from his stomach before it punctured his intestines.

This week, Evashwick goes to work on gaining recognition in another way. Evashwick assumes the role of team captain and top scoring threat for a team that is looking to contend for a Southern Section title after graduating two All-Americans from last year's squad.

Evashwick is a four-year varsity player who earned all-league honors last season while helping the Wolverines to a 10th consecutive Mission League title, but this is his first as a centerpiece player.

He prepared by spending part of the summer training in Europe.

"Now is his moment to really show everyone," Harvard-Westlake coach Larry Felix said. "It's like, 'Hey, I've been a role player, now I can do this. I am a factor."'

Injury a new one for water polo coach
