. The theme for this year's event was ``On the King Holiday, Help Somebody!''

``He was a great leader. A lot of his philosophy has encouraged us,'' Rick Fowler, 65, of Palmdale, said afterward. ``It helped all races. He wasn't just for blacks.''

Sanethia Thomas, 17, of Lancaster, said she was pleased to see the event drew whites, Asians and Latinos as well as African-Americans.

``I saw unity,'' Thomas said. ``It was a real positive event.''

The featured speaker at the Lancaster event was the Rev. Jack Hayford of the First Foursquare Church of Van Nuys-the Church on the Way. Under Hayford's leadership, the church grew from 18 members in 1969 to more than 8,000 now.

Hayford talked about what he calls his ``retarded pilgrimage.'' He said he followed a spiritual and intellectual journey from being ``a blind participant in a culture that discriminated against so many'' to being more sensitive to African-Americans.

Hayford recalled an incident at his church which he said showed how he had been blinded by culture. In the foyer of the church was a model of a new sanctuary the congregation was planning to build.

One day an African-American couple pointed out to Hayford the figurines with the model were all of white people.

His first thought, Hayford said, was how small-minded the couple was for pointing that out. Then he realized they had a point and that small things like that hurt.

``The issue wasn't how small-minded they were, but how small I was,'' Hayford said.
